## Overview

Draft from supplied facts and proof, then the author's documented voice, then platform conventions. Use `content-voice` for generic editing; this playbook adds Instagram packaging and conversion decisions. Never invent experience or results to make a caption sound personal. Writing a package doesn't authorize publication, outreach, or DMs.

Open reference/mechanics.md when choosing runtime, interpreting benchmarks, using audio or experimental features, or preparing AI disclosure. Open reference/launch.md when drafting any launch or proof package, planning creator participation, or measuring a conversion path.

## Mental model

Monitor average watch time, likes per reach, and sends per reach. Mosseri named watch time, likes, and sends as leading signals, with likes more relevant to connected reach and sends to unconnected reach; average watch time isn't a per-reach ratio (reported platform guidance, Mosseri via Social Media Today, 2025-01). This dated statement isn't a complete current ranking formula.

Treat Feed, Explore, Reels, and Stories separately. Don't infer distribution weights from a visible post. For Feed, design for time worth spending, substantive comments, and a clear reason to visit the profile; these are editorial objectives, not verified current signal weights (directional). Use Stories for relationship follow-up (directional).

Choose a format by its job. Reels led discovery in Metricool's sample; carousels led follower-based engagement in Socialinsider's sample (measured, Metricool, n=24,364,803 posts, 2026-06; measured, Socialinsider, n=35M posts, 2026-02, updated through Q2). Neither finding guarantees sales.

## Format and caption rules

| Job | Format and anatomy | Length decision |
|---|---|---|
| Show a result or process | Reel: visible task, action, observable result, limitation | Use a micro-loop for a repeatable visual; a compact narrative for a decision; an extended explainer only while each beat advances it (directional). Test 45–60 seconds for narratives (measured, Socialinsider, n=Reels length analysis; sample size unstated, 2026-07). |
| Explain or document proof | Carousel: independent opening frames, evidence, conditions, useful ending | Use only slides that add information; preview the current composer's capacity (directional). |
| Maintain a conversation | Story: immediate context, demonstration, relevant reply or link invitation | Keep a short sequence and remove any frame whose loss changes nothing (directional). |
| Let an asset speak | Single image: strong photograph or legible artifact with necessary context | Keep the caption brief unless interpretation needs space (directional). |

Reels accept up to 20 minutes, but those over 3 minutes aren't recommended to non-followers through Explore or the Reels tab, according to the cited Help Center summary (reported platform guidance, Instagram Help via Socialinsider, 2026-07). Keep discovery explainers within that ceiling; don't pad a simple visual to the measured narrative band.

Open with the action or evidence instead of a logo card. Script hook, on-screen text, voiceover, shot changes, and last frame separately. Make meaning understandable without hearing; check subtitle accuracy, contrast, and whether overlays obscure the demonstration. Choose original speech or licensed music for the idea; a trending track needs both relevance and suitable rights (directional).

Total watch time includes replay time (official, Meta Reels Insights, 2023-04). A natural loop can be useful; it doesn't guarantee a ranking advantage (directional).

Carousels can be resurfaced on another frame after an unengaged exposure (reported platform guidance, Instagram behavior via Socialinsider, 2026-02). Make the opening and following frame understandable independently; don't promise a specific repeat exposure. End with usable reference material rather than a compulsory save request (directional).

### Caption, cover, and profile

Use these caption bands as editorial shapes, without a universal character cutoff (directional):

| Band | Use | Shape |
|---|---|---|
| Brief | Self-explanatory Reel or image | Opening claim, essential condition, optional action |
| Medium | Demo or carousel | Opening claim followed by a compact explanation of what the visual omits |
| Extended | Customer proof or founder decision | Connected paragraphs explaining evidence, conditions, and unresolved tradeoffs |

Put the specific subject and reason to care in the first line. Preview the actual collapsed caption and move the payoff above “more”; don't assume a fixed truncation count. Use blank lines between changes of thought, not after every sentence. Place the CTA after value, unless access instructions are needed immediately. Use emojis only when they match the author and carry meaning; don't replace words or bullets with them (directional).

Use literal topic language early for clarity and search intent; don't call captions a confirmed Reels ranking factor. Write alt text describing the actual image and essential embedded text; don't stuff keywords into accessibility copy. Supply an accessible visual description alongside video captions when needed (directional).

Posts and Reels have a five-hashtag cap in the verified feature report (reported platform guidance, Instagram via Metricool Trends, 2026-06). Use fewer when no additional descriptive tag helps. Preview cover crops in both feed and profile views; keep the central subject and title readable. Align bio wording, destination link, pinned posts, and Highlights with the visitor's buying question, and remove obsolete launch promises (directional).

Live, Broadcast Channels, and Notes are optional support formats: propose Live for a staffed demonstration, Channels for opted-in updates, and Notes for a brief prompt only after checking account availability. Feature eligibility and limits aren't established here. Threads cross-posting requires a separate destination edit; don't assume the Instagram caption and CTA transfer unchanged (directional).

## Launch and proof posts

Collect the audience and buying situation, promise, available proof with source, desired action, destination link, campaign stage, and disclosure obligations. Name the recurring buyer problem and the author's role. “No CTA” is a valid choice. If required evidence is missing, omit the unsupported claim or hold the draft; placeholder examples below aren't publishable until filled (directional).

| Shape | Native execution | Caption band |
|---|---|---|
| Launch day | Show the product doing the promised job; state availability and the access path. Strip the product name and check that something useful remains. | Medium |
| Demo or artifact | Record the task and result; expose a boundary or dependency. | Brief or medium |
| Customer outcome | Show before/after under comparable conditions, with permission and sourced results; state other changes that could explain them. | Extended |
| Founder decision | Explain the chosen tradeoff using an actual build artifact; retain what remains unresolved. | Extended |
| Objection answer | State the buyer's concern fairly, show the relevant evidence, and identify who still shouldn't buy. | Medium |
| Recap or lessons | Show observed use after launch, correct earlier assumptions, and state current availability. | Medium or extended |

These are craft choices, not measured optimal post shapes (directional).

Choose a tested bio link, Story link sticker, or requested DM delivery path. Don't rely on caption-link availability without checking the account. Make the destination match the promise and test it inside Instagram before publication (directional).

Permit a comment keyword when it requests a clearly named resource and the delivery flow works. Send that resource before qualification; ask permission before further commercial follow-up. Provide a usable alternative path. Empty comment farming, unsolicited bulk DMs, fake testimonials, engagement exchanges, and concealed employee endorsements aren't acceptable editorial practice. No verified Instagram-specific account-demotion rule or blanket automation exemption is established here (directional).

Invite relevant Collab partners and obtain acceptance before relying on shared publication. Brief creators on proof and boundaries while preserving their voice. Tag actual contributors with permission; don't mass-tag unrelated accounts. Disclose employment, gifts, and paid relationships plainly and use applicable native disclosure controls. Confirm account-specific requirements before publishing sponsored work (directional).

Use founders for decisions they personally own and the brand handle for maintained product information; no verified Instagram founder-versus-brand multiplier supports a universal preference (directional).

### Launch-week rhythm

This is an illustrative schedule, not an algorithmic timing rule. T is launch day; shift or skip rows when proof or reply coverage is missing (directional).

| Illustrative day | Package | First-hours reply plan | Measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| T-7 | Story showing the buying problem | Collect wording and objections with consent | Relevant replies |
| T-3 | Demo Reel; Trial Reel if available | Answer fit questions | Watch time, qualified profile interest |
| T | Announcement plus Story access path | Assign a human owner for access and purchase questions | Link taps, requested DMs, registrations |
| T+2 | Proof carousel | Explain conditions behind results | Saves, evidence questions, qualified conversations |
| T+4 | Objection Reel or staffed Live | Address unresolved limitations | Useful replies, destination actions |
| T+7 | Use-in-context recap; refresh Highlights | Follow up only with consent | Activation or bookings attributable to the path |

## Voice on this platform

Use supplied captions or a speech transcript to match the author's register in each format. Without samples, use clear conversational prose and functional on-screen labels; don't borrow meme dialect to imply a personality. Preserve natural contractions and fragments without adding typos, fake edits, artificial lowercase, or manufactured anecdotes. Keep on-screen copy short enough to read during the shot; let the caption supply conditions the visual can't carry (directional).

Review cover text and each slide for what the viewer can actually learn. Replace an empty suspense line with its subject; remove a grand transformation claim when the artifact shows only a smaller change (directional, Gichigi, 2026-02). Keep a question, contrast, three-part list, fragment, or em-dash when it communicates the author's meaning (directional, Aborn, 2026-07; Cox, 2026-06). Neither these forms nor polished grammar identify authorship; don't add colloquialisms to a deliberately formal voice (directional).

Give each surface a job: the visual shows, speech explains the relevant action, the caption supplies context, and alt text makes the visual's information available without sight. Don't duplicate the sales hook across all four. Keep a material qualifier beside its claim, including on a before/after slide; don't bury it only in the last frame. A genuine observation can end without a lesson, limitation, or CTA when none is needed (directional).

Make replies sound like an answer to that person. Don't turn every answer into a pitch. Use a fluent local editor for localized idiom; don't manufacture regional speech (directional).

## Cadence and engagement

Prefer sustainable production and staffed replies. Buffer's account analysis associated 3–5 weekly posts with about 12% higher reach per post than 1–2, without proving causality (measured, Buffer Frequency, n=2.1M posts/102K accounts, 2025-08). Use account results to adjust; no burst-suppression penalty is established.

For a cold start, test Thursday at 9 a.m., Wednesday at noon, or Wednesday at 6 p.m. as candidates, recording the chosen audience timezone. These are global study leaders, not guarantees in that timezone; use follower activity and reply availability to refine them (measured, Buffer Timing, n=9.6M posts, 2026-07).

Assign reply coverage at publication and during the following days. Remove spam and fraudulent links; escalate sensitive complaints privately with consent. Compare equivalent formats and reporting windows; record actual Insights field names and denominators. Don't substitute public comments for private sends or count registrations as sales (directional).

## What gets suppressed

Accounts primarily reposting unoriginal Reels, photos, or carousels can lose recommendation distribution. Material additions matter; watermark changes, speed changes, and credited screenshots are insufficient. Followers may still see content; the report describes an exception for licensed publishers. This doesn't mean non-followers can never encounter it (reported platform guidance, Instagram via TechCrunch, 2026-04). Meta's first-party originality announcement separately distinguishes recommendation treatment from intellectual-property rules: credit or permission alone doesn't establish every distribution claim (official, Meta Originality, 2024-04).

Other-app logos can limit Reel recommendations; your own logo is allowed (reported platform guidance, Mosseri via Social Media Today, 2024-10). Export a clean master. Keep video legible and avoid borders or text that hides the subject as production craft; don't claim a verified current muted-video penalty (directional).

Use the disclosure tool for digitally created or altered photorealistic video or realistic-sounding audio (official, Meta Midterms, 2026-06 update). Profiles centered on an AI-generated person must use the “AI-generated profile” disclosure; undisclosed profiles face reduced reach, while disclosure itself isn't a penalty for synthetic identity (reported platform guidance, Instagram via TechCrunch, 2026-08). Consult the mechanics reference for post labels and ads; don't infer a general AI-caption ranking penalty.

## Examples

All examples are illustrative drafting scenarios. Bracketed facts and access paths require supplied evidence and verification before publication. Directions, quoted outcomes, and first-person claims are not real customer evidence.

### Developer tool: demo Reel

Scenario: a maintainer supplies a recording and confirms the supported boundary.

| Beat | Visual / on-screen copy | Voiceover |
|---|---|---|
| Hook | Actual stale-file result: “Find the caller of [symbol]” | “I'm tracing [symbol] after this rename.” |
| Action | Show the query and result opening | “Here's the match in [file]. Opening it takes me to the call site.” |
| Limitation | Show the unsupported case | “Generated files still need [manual step].” |
| Last frame | “Try it on your repository” plus verified access path | “The setup guide is linked in my bio.” |

Caption: “In this recording, [tool/version] follows [symbol] through a rename in [repository]. Generated files still need [manual step]; the setup guide in my bio covers that boundary.”
Cover: “Trace a renamed symbol.” Supply accurate subtitles and a description of the demonstrated result.

Why it works: the format rule puts an observable task before the product pitch.
The provenance rule keeps compatibility and unresolved work visible.

### B2B SaaS: proof carousel

Opening slide: “[Customer]'s approval queue before the routing change.”
Following slide: “[Customer], [same queue scope and counting rule]: requests waiting for an owner, [before] during [baseline date/window] to [after] during [comparable comparison date/window]. [Other process change] also happened; this comparison can't isolate the software's effect. Source: [dated export identifier].”
Evidence slide: “[Dated export identifier]: [measurement method, comparable windows, and concurrent-change details].”
Keep the source identifier and conditions readable on the numerical frame. If they won't fit legibly, narrow the numerical claim; don't move its conditions to another frame.
Boundary slide: “Legal exceptions still need [manual review].”
Final slide: “The routing worksheet is available through the bio link.”

Caption: “[Customer] shared these approval logs with permission. The queue changed after [intervention], alongside [other change]. We can't isolate the software's effect from this comparison. The worksheet shows the routing rules.”
Asset brief: crop the approved export without hiding labels; redact private data. Alt text explains the comparison and conditions.

Why it works: independent opening frames follow the carousel rule.
The proof rule separates an observed change from a causal claim.

### Consumer maker: product photograph

Weak: “Meet the perfect mug for everyone.”
Revision: “The handle on [mug] leaves room for [demonstrated grip]. I photographed it beside [known-size object] so you can judge the scale. It hasn't been tested for [use]. Dimensions and current stock are linked in bio.”

Asset brief: photograph the actual mug in hand, without a generated product substitute. Alt text: “[Colour] mug held by its handle beside [object], showing [visible feature].” Follow-up Story: demonstrate the grip and answer material-care questions from supplied instructions.

Why it works: the single-image rule lets the physical evidence carry the post.
The caption rule replaces a universal promise with a visible detail and boundary.

### Local service: objection Stories and requested DM

Opening frame, actual work photo: “Assessing this sofa fabric for on-site cleaning.”
Following frame: “We need the care label and a patch check before quoting.”
Final frame: “Reply ‘fabric’ for the photo checklist. A photo alone can't confirm treatment safety.”

Accompanying caption: “Send the care-label photo privately; leave your address out of public replies. The checklist explains what we need before a booking.”
Requested DM: “Here's the checklist: [verified link]. If you'd like an assessment, may we ask about the fabric and stain?”
Asset brief: use a consented job photo with no identifying details; caption speech and describe the visible fabric.

Why it works: the CTA rule delivers a named resource before further qualification.
The voice rule answers a buying concern without inventing a successful treatment.
