# Airbnb

Hand-authored from a 2026-05-25 walk through the production marketing-and-product surfaces of `airbnb.com`. The same browser session that captured the screenshots also dumped computed styles for every button, heading, card, and form chrome element on each page, so the colour / radius / weight values below are observed numbers, not memory or marketing material. `tokens.css` next to this file carries the canonical OKLCH values; treat anything in this brief as a description of what the live site does, and let any disagreement get reconciled in the cross-check at the bottom.

Headline take-away from this pass: the catalog's `tokens.css` and the `preview-template.html` next to it describe Airbnb as a brand whose every primary CTA fills with solid Rausch red, and that has stopped matching the live site. The current production primary CTA is a **three-stop horizontal gradient running Bellini → Babu Pink → deeper Babu** (`#E61E4D → #E31C5F → #D70466`). Solid `#ff385c` Rausch survives in narrower spots — the homepage search-pill submit orb, the rating-star icon, the small dot on category labels, the brand glyph. The CTA gradient is the dominant chromatic event on every host- and conversion-page in the sample. The tokens file flags this in a long comment but the preview's `[data-variant="primary"]` button still ships solid Rausch. Drift, recorded.

## §1 Canonical canvas

Every sampled surface ships on white (`rgb(255, 255, 255)` body background, `rgb(34, 34, 34)` ink) with no real product dark mode exposed on the marketing tree. The product app behind sign-in (host dashboard, messaging, reservations) is also light-canonical in current builds; we are not synthesising a dark from a marquee surface.

| Surface | URL | Canvas | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homepage | `https://www.airbnb.com/` | white | Three category tabs (Homes / Experiences / Services) with small illustrated icons; segmented search pill below the tabs; multi-row property card carousel as the page floor. |
| Experiences search | `/experiences` | white | Same top chrome as homepage; `Homes / Experiences / Services` tab strip with the Experiences tab carrying the active underline. Loads skeleton card rows on first paint. |
| Host landing | `/host/homes` | white | Marquee surface — single-column hero with a 120 px display heading at weight 700, the gradient `Get started` pill in the top-right slot, a horizontal price-slider widget below the headline. Quiet, almost zero secondary chrome. |
| Host experiences | `/host/experiences` | white | Two-column hero (text left / photo well right), pink gradient `Get started` again in the top-right, h1 set at 60 px / weight 600 / -2.4 px tracking. |
| Listing detail | `/rooms/51429977` | white | The compact top-nav search-pill variant — single rounded-pill bar reading `Anywhere · Anytime · Add guests · [search icon]`, no tabs. The pill is split with rounded outer corners and sharp middle dividers (`radius: 40px 4px 4px 40px` on the leftmost cell, mirrored on the right). Photo grid is a 4-up mosaic with `border-radius: 12px` on the outer corners only. |
| Help center | `/help` | white | Quiet surface — single search field rendered as a 100 px-radius pill with a solid-Rausch submit orb on the right end, tab strip `Guest / Home host / Experience host / Service host / Travel admin` with the active tab gaining a 2 px ink underline. |
| AirCover for Hosts | `/aircover-for-hosts` (reached via `/trust`) | white | Quieter still — wordless airbnb logomark at left, gradient `List your home` pill at right (radius 8 px, not the full 999 px). Long-form copy in two-column grid below. |

The marketing top-nav and the in-product top-nav are two different chromes. Marketing pages keep the wordmark + category tabs + segmented search pill below; the listing-detail page collapses everything into a single compact pill in the top bar. Both are worth representing in the catalog; the current preview only shows the marketing variant.

## §2 Palette

Live citations follow each value (URL + the DOM element where the colour was sampled). OKLCH is the canonical form; hex is rendered for legibility. `(synthesised)` marks utility neutrals we filled in to round out the shadcn-semantic slots.

### Brand primary (gradient + accent ladder)

The brand carries a three-stop horizontal gradient as its primary CTA fill plus a discrete Rausch hue used as an icon/accent tint. They are not interchangeable; the gradient is the headline and Rausch is the accent.

- `--brand-primary-gradient` (notional name; live as `linear-gradient(to right, #E61E4D 0%, #E31C5F 50%, #D70466 100%)`). Live: `/rooms/51429977` — reservation card `Check availability` button (`background-image` returned `linear-gradient(to right, rgb(230, 30, 77) 0%, rgb(227, 28, 95) 50%, rgb(215, 4, 102) 100%)`); also `/host/homes` `Get started` button, and `/aircover-for-hosts` `List your home` button. Three live surfaces, one fill. The gradient currently does not have a token in `tokens.css` — see drift note below.
  - Stop 1 — `oklch(0.5870 0.2330 13.5)` (= `#E61E4D`) — Bellini.
  - Stop 2 — `oklch(0.5790 0.2390 6.3)` (= `#E31C5F`) — Babu Pink.
  - Stop 3 — `oklch(0.5260 0.2540 0.5)` (= `#D70466`) — deeper Babu.
- `--primary`: `oklch(0.6579 0.2309 17.0745)` (= `#ff385c`). Live: `/` — homepage search-pill submit orb (visible as a solid `#ff385c` circle, 48 px diameter, `border-radius: 50px`); also `/help` search submit orb. Used as the rating-star fill and the small dot before category labels in the topnav (`linkColors` on `/experiences` returned `rgb(255, 56, 92)` for the link with the active `Experiences` underline).
- `--brand-primary-active`: `oklch(0.5769 0.2277 18.4974)` (= `#E00B41`). Live: was observed in the `topBgColors` sweep on `/` (`rgb(224, 11, 65)` count 1 — appears on the active hover/pressed orb state on the homepage; the preview's hover token).
- `--brand-primary-disabled`: `oklch(0.9026 0.0529 5.0203)`. Notional; not observed inline on a sampled surface, retained from prior catalog as the lightened disabled-state tint.

### Documented secondary brand tones (legacy / sub-brand)

These are documented in Airbnb's older brand identity material as "Bellini" / "Babu Pink" / "Luxe" / "Plus." They are visible in the gradient ladder above (Bellini and Babu are the gradient stops) plus two surviving tokens for older sub-brand surfaces:

- `--brand-luxe`: `oklch(0.3252 0.1677 301.7108)` (deep eggplant / Airbnb Luxe). **Status: not-observed-2026-05.** Did not appear in any sampled surface — the Airbnb Luxe sub-brand surface has been retired and the homepage has no surviving Luxe entry point. Retained in the token file for archival purposes.
- `--brand-plus`: `oklch(0.4383 0.1608 0.8397)` (warm rose / Airbnb Plus). **Status: not-observed-2026-05.** Same story — Airbnb Plus sunset years ago and no surface in this audit referenced it.

### Canvas + neutrals

Every value here was observed directly in the body / card / topnav DOM elements; nothing here is synthesised except where noted.

- `--background`: `oklch(1 0 0)` (= `#FFFFFF`). Live: `/` — `getComputedStyle(document.body).backgroundColor` = `rgb(255, 255, 255)`. Universal on every sampled URL.
- `--foreground`: `oklch(0.2520 0 0)` (= `#222222`). Live: `/` — body text colour `rgb(34, 34, 34)`. The hex `#222` shows up everywhere the brand commits to ink (heading text, nav links, button label text on white).
- `--card`: `oklch(1 0 0)` (= `#FFFFFF`). Same as background — property cards are flat-on-canvas, no fill beneath the photo. (synthesised slot value, matches observed)
- `--card-foreground`: matches `--foreground`. (synthesised)
- `--popover` / `--popover-foreground`: match `--background` / `--foreground`. (synthesised — pop-overs and dropdowns on the live site use white cards with `#222` ink and a soft drop shadow.)
- `--muted`: `oklch(0.9761 0 0)` (≈ `rgb(247, 247, 247)`). Live: `/help` — the help search-field wrap reports `rgb(247, 247, 247)` as the fill. Used widely as the alternating-band tint behind sub-sections.
- `--muted-foreground`: `oklch(0.5243 0 0)` (≈ `rgb(106, 106, 106)`). Live: `/experiences` — `linkColors` sweep returned `rgb(106, 106, 106)` as the second-most-common link colour (secondary nav / footer copy).
- `--accent`: `oklch(1 0 0)`. (synthesised — Airbnb's "accent" semantic slot maps onto the same canvas; there is no separate accent fill in the topnav or card chrome.)
- `--accent-foreground`: matches `--foreground`.
- `--secondary`: `oklch(0.9761 0 0)` — light grey card surface for the help-search wrap and the small grey circle behind the heart icon on a card. (`rgb(242, 242, 242)` observed in `topBgColors`.)
- `--destructive`: `oklch(0.5308 0.2178 29.2339)`. Inferred shadcn-semantic value; Airbnb's error-state red on form fields is in the same hue family (`oklch(0.5392 0.1816 33.7195)` is the brand's text-error token, slightly darker — see `--brand-primary-error-text` below). (synthesised slot)

### Hairlines, borders, body neutrals

- `--brand-hairline-soft`: `oklch(0.9401 0 0)` (≈ `rgb(221, 221, 221)`). Live: `/` — `topBgColors` sweep top hit `rgb(221, 221, 221)` with count 35, used as topnav bottom-border, search-pill outer ring, card-grid dividers. The most reused chrome neutral on the site.
- `--brand-border-strong`: `oklch(0.8109 0 0)` (≈ `rgb(176, 176, 176)`). Live: `/` — `topBgColors` returned `rgb(176, 176, 176)` count 12 — secondary divider on form fields and reservation card.
- `--brand-surface-strong`: `oklch(0.9612 0 0)` (≈ `rgb(235, 235, 235)`). Live: alternating band and footer background; observed indirectly through the same `topBgColors` sweep.
- `--brand-body`: `oklch(0.3677 0 0)` (deeper grey body copy). Live: secondary copy on `/host/homes` hero subtitle. Distinct from `--foreground` — used where the brand wants mid-weight prose against white.
- `--brand-muted-soft`: `oklch(0.5200 0 0)` (= `rgb(132, 132, 132)`). Live: search-field placeholder copy ("Search destinations") on the homepage hero pill. **Tokens.css note:** the comment in the file says this was darkened from the original `0.66` to `0.52` to clear WCAG AA on the search-field-value class. Audited target is fine — this is a utility-neutral tune, not a brand-identity modification.

### Polarity-locked / fixed surfaces

- `--brand-on-dark`: `oklch(1 0 0)` (= `#FFFFFF`). Live: the `Save` button label inside `property-favorite` chips, where the chip background is the dark scrim `rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.18)` over the photo. The white ink is locked — never lifted when the surrounding canvas flips.
- `--brand-scrim`: `oklch(0 0 0)`. Live: photo overlay tint for the heart-icon hover state, and the `rgba(32, 32, 32, 0.4)` chip background observed on `/experiences` skeleton cards (host-page modal close button).

### Star rating + legal link (small but discrete brand colours)

- `--brand-star-rating`: `oklch(0.2520 0 0)` (= `#222222`). Live: every property card rating row uses a black filled-star glyph (the `★` character rendered at the ink colour). Not gold, not Rausch — Airbnb's filled star is monochrome ink on white.
- `--brand-legal-link`: `oklch(0.6501 0.1874 259.3973)` (a blue link tint). Live: legal-text links in footer copy and inline ToS prompts. Used sparingly; outside the legal context every text-link colour falls back to `--foreground` with no underline until hover.

### Error states

- `--brand-primary-error-text`: `oklch(0.5392 0.1816 33.7195)` and `--brand-primary-error-text-hover`: `oklch(0.4990 0.1815 32.8403)`. Form validation copy and hover state respectively. Were not stress-tested in this pass because all sampled surfaces gated their error state behind interaction.

## §3 Typography

Single family, single body weight, very small custom-tracking and lh fingerprint. Airbnb commissioned its own typeface (Cereal) in 2018, replacing Circular — both are still referenced in the font stack as fallbacks for older devices.

| Role | Family | Weight | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display | `Airbnb Cereal VF` → `Circular` → system | 600 (typical) / 700 (host pages only) | 60–120 px, `letter-spacing: -1.8px to -2.4px` |
| Heading | same | 500 — 600 | 22–28 px, `letter-spacing: -0.44px` on listing-detail h2 |
| Body | same | 400 | 14–16 px, `line-height: 20.02px` (≈ 1.43) |
| Caption | same | 400 | 12–13 px (most common type size site-wide; `topTypography` returned `400/14px` count 726 followed by `400/12px` count 434) |
| Mono | n/a — site does not use a mono family in marketing chrome | — | only the wrapper inputs on `/help` carry `monospace` for placeholder rendering, otherwise none |

Observed display fingerprint:
- `/host/homes` hero `h1`: 120 px / weight 700 / -1.8 px tracking / line-height 64 px. The single heaviest display weight on the live site, reserved for the host-conversion page.
- `/host/experiences` hero `h1`: 60 px / weight 600 / -2.4 px tracking / line-height 64 px. Display heads on guest-facing pages stay at 600; only host pages push to 700.
- `/rooms/51429977` listing `h1`: 26 px / weight 500 — much smaller than marketing display. The listing pages cap display at 26 px and let the photo grid do the visual work.
- `/help` `h1`: 14 px / weight 400 (i.e. the visible "Hi, how can we help?" h1 is rendered visually large via a `<span>` child — the semantic `<h1>` is a small wrapper, the visual heading is set on a styled inner element).

Tracking is the loudest typographic move: at display sizes the brand pulls -1.8 to -2.4 px (about -0.02 em), which is unusual for a consumer marketplace and reads as "tight, confident, slightly editorial." Body copy sits at `letter-spacing: normal`.

## §4 Component vocabulary

Sampled from the seven URLs above. Each entry below is a distinct component the brand ships; I have aimed for the exhaustive list, not a five-category summary. Where the same role ships with different chrome on different surfaces (CTA pill on listing page vs. CTA pill on /host) both are documented as separate variants.

### Primary CTA — gradient pill (listing-detail variant)
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/51429977` — reservation card `button` reading `Check availability`
**Description:** Three-stop horizontal gradient `linear-gradient(to right, #E61E4D 0%, #E31C5F 50%, #D70466 100%)`, `border-radius: 999px` (full pill), white text at `font-weight: 500`, `padding: 14px 24px`, `min-height: 48px`. The whole pill carries the gradient — no inner shadow, no border, no glyph. Visually the warmest piece of chrome on the listing page.
**States:** default only sampled. The same gradient appears unchanged on hover (no darkening observed in the screenshot pair). Disabled state was not exercised — would expect a reduced-opacity pass over the same gradient.

### Primary CTA — gradient rounded-rect (host / AirCover variant)
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/host/homes`, `/host/experiences`, `/aircover-for-hosts` — header `button` reading `Get started` and `List your home`
**Description:** Same Bellini→Babu gradient, but `border-radius: 8px` (rounded rectangle, not pill) and a slightly tighter padding (`6px 16px` for compact / `11px 24px 7px` for the larger headline variant). The headline variant ships with a leading SVG glyph (a small house outline on `List your home`) inside the same gradient surface. The shape difference between the listing-page pill and the host-page rect is intentional and consistent across host pages — it is not noise.
**States:** default. Hover not exercised.

### Secondary CTA — dark pill (host inquiry variant)
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/host/experiences` — `button` reading `Ask about hosting`
**Description:** Solid `#222` fill, white label, `border-radius: 9999px` (full pill), `padding: 14px 24px`, `font-weight: 500`. Used as the second-action button beneath the gradient `Get started` on host pages; it sits to the right of the gradient pill and matches its size.
**States:** default sampled.

### Tertiary text-link CTA — `Become a host`
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/` topnav — `a` reading `Become a host`
**Description:** No fill, no border (computed border returns `0px solid #222` — i.e. transparent), `color: #222`, `font-weight: 500`, `font-size: 14px`, `border-radius: 20px` (only as a hover-bg shape, the radius is invisible at rest), `padding: 11px 12px`. Effectively a text link with a rounded hover state.
**States:** default observed. The 20 px radius lights up to `--brand-surface-strong` on hover (inferred from preview-template, not sampled live because hover state was not captured).

### Tertiary text-link CTA — `Ready to Airbnb it?`
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/aircover-for-hosts` topnav — sits left of the `List your home` gradient
**Description:** No chrome at all. Pure text link, weight 500, 14 px, default cursor on hover. Demonstrates Airbnb's right-aligned-actions pattern: text label as a soft prompt next to a chromatic CTA.
**States:** default observed.

### Icon button — globe / hamburger (topnav right cluster)
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/` — topnav, the two circular buttons right of the user menu
**Description:** 40 × 40 px, `background: #F2F2F2` (= `rgb(242, 242, 242)`), `border-radius: 50%`, single inline SVG glyph centred. No border, no shadow. Used for global controls (language switch / mobile menu).
**States:** default. Hover and pressed not exercised.

### Heart / wishlist icon button (card overlay)
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/` — property cards inside `Popular homes in Tartu linn` carousel; each card carries a heart button at top-right of the photo
**Description:** 28 × 28 px, `background: rgb(242, 242, 242)` (very faint translucent grey scrim over photo), heart glyph in `rgb(193, 193, 193)` (a softer grey, not Rausch), `border-radius: 50%`, no border. Reads as a near-invisible touch target until a guest favorites the listing, at which point the heart fills Rausch (state not sampled live).
**States:** default observed. Filled-on-save state inferred but not captured.

### Search-pill (homepage marketing variant)
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/` and `/experiences` — central `form[role="search"]` below the topnav
**Description:** Three rounded fields (`Where`, `When`, `Who`) joined as a single segmented pill, with a solid Rausch submit orb at the right end. Each field is a `button[role="button"]` with `border-radius: 32px`, no fill at rest, internal padding ~`0.5rem 1rem`. The leftmost and rightmost fields carry asymmetric radii (`40px 4px 4px 40px` left, mirrored right) so the seams meet at sharp inner edges. Each field carries a small label above its value (`Where` / `Search destinations` is the canonical default). The outer pill carries a soft drop shadow (`0 4px 16px rgba(0,0,0,0.08)` in the preview-template — matches the live surface visually).
**States:** default sampled. The submit orb glows the active-state colour `#E00B41` on press (not captured live).

### Search-pill (compact listing-detail variant)
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/rooms/51429977` topnav — `Anywhere · Anytime · Add guests · [magnifier]`
**Description:** Single-row 48 px pill, three button cells with the same `40px 4px 4px 40px` outer / mirrored-right radius pattern as the marketing variant, but smaller padding (`12px 32px 12px 20px` on the left cell) and no label-above-value treatment — only the placeholder copy. Right end carries the inline magnifier glyph at `radius: 4px 40px 40px 4px` (so the orb is the rightmost rounded cell rather than a separate circle). This is the "search has been collapsed" variant used once a guest is inside a listing detail.
**States:** default sampled.

### Help-center search bar
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/help` — `input[type="search"]` with `placeholder: Search how-tos and more`
**Description:** Single field with `wrapBg: rgb(247, 247, 247)` (light-grey fill, the brand's only sustained fill for a single-input pill), `border: rgb(221, 221, 221)` (`--brand-hairline-soft`), `border-radius: 100px`. Solid-Rausch circular submit orb on the right end (44–48 px diameter, full circle). Field height 68 px. The closest the brand gets to a "Stripe-style" filled search.
**States:** default sampled.

### Category tab — top-nav (Homes / Experiences / Services)
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/` — `nav` element holding three anchor tags with small illustrated icons
**Description:** Each tab is a clickable `a` carrying a small illustrated SVG (cottage / hot-air balloon / bell) to the left of its label text. The active tab carries a dark 2 px underline rendered on a child element (not on the `<a>` itself — computed border on the `<a>` is `0px none`). Inactive tabs have no underline; on hover they grow a faint underline. NEW badges (cyan pill) appear on `Experiences` and `Services` until those products are no longer brand-new — visible on the listing-detail screenshot but not the homepage. The illustrated icons themselves are multi-colour SVGs (peach / red roof / sky-blue balloon) — they are not monochrome glyphs.
**States:** default + active sampled. Hover-grown underline not captured directly.

### Help-center tab strip
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/help` — `Guest / Home host / Experience host / Service host / Travel admin`
**Description:** Same active-underline pattern as the homepage tabs but without the leading illustrated icon — pure text. Active tab gets a 2 px ink underline on its bottom edge, inactive tabs are unstyled. `padding: 0 0 0.75rem` on each tab; the row sits above a hairline divider so the underline reads as a "tab below tab-bar."
**States:** default + active sampled.

### Property card — large signature variant
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/` — every card inside `Popular homes in Tartu linn` and `Earn Airbnb credit at featured hotels` carousels
**Description:** Vertical column: square photo (`aspect-ratio: 1/1`, `border-radius: 12px`, `overflow: hidden`), heart icon overlaid at top-right, optional `Guest favorite` badge at top-left, then below the photo a single-line title, a host-type sub-line (`Business host` / `Individual host`), a price+dot+rating row. No card background fill — flat on canvas. Spacing between cards in the grid is generous (`gap: 1.5rem`).
**States:** default sampled.

### Property card — experience variant
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/experiences` (loaded skeleton state at sample time; described from preview-template + earlier screenshots in this session)
**Description:** Same vertical column as the home variant but with a stronger badge presence — `Sat · 6PM` / `Fri · 8AM` weekday-time tag rendered as a small black-on-white pill at top-left, and the title bills a single line plus a small `Business host` or `Individual host` line plus a `From €50 / guest · ★ 4.97` line. Same `1/1` photo ratio, same 12 px radius.
**States:** default sampled (post-skeleton).

### Guest Favorite badge (card overlay)
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/` — every card in the Tartu carousel with the laurel decoration
**Description:** Pill carrying the label `Guest favorite`, `background: #FFFFFF`, ink `#222`, `padding: 0.25rem 0.5rem`, `border-radius: 9999px` (full pill), small drop shadow. Sits at top-left of the photo, mirroring the heart at top-right. Smaller / "New" pill in the same shape carries a `New` label on the marquee variant.
**States:** default sampled.

### Guest Favorite laurel — listing-detail variant
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/rooms/51429977` — under the title block, a `Guest favorite` row flanked by two laurel-wreath SVG glyphs and a rating + review-count column to the right
**Description:** A larger version of the badge, no rounded pill — instead a row of inline content: left laurel SVG, the words `Guest favorite`, right laurel SVG, then a column with the rating (`4.82` set at 32–36 px / weight 600), a five-star row in ink black, and below it `181 Reviews`. Sits inside a `border: 1px solid var(--brand-hairline-soft)` rounded card with `border-radius: 16px` / `padding: 1.25rem`.
**States:** default sampled.

### Photo gallery — hero mosaic (listing detail)
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/rooms/51429977` — top of the listing page
**Description:** Four-up mosaic with one large left photo (~ 50% width, ratio 1:1) and four smaller photos to the right in a 2 × 2 grid. Outer corners (top-left, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-right of the mosaic) carry a 12 px rounded radius; all inner seams meet at sharp 0 px corners. The bottom-right cell carries an overlaid `Show all photos` chip (`background: #FFFFFF`, `border: 1px solid #222`, `border-radius: 8px`, label weight 500). Mosaic height matches the photo aspect ratio — no fixed height.
**States:** default sampled. Click-into-modal state not exercised.

### Reservation / booking card (sidebar on listing detail)
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/rooms/51429977` — right column, sticky aside
**Description:** White card, `box-shadow: 0 6px 16px rgba(0,0,0,0.12)` (observed visually; not computed-sampled), `border-radius: 12px`, `padding: 1.5rem`. Header reads `Add dates for prices` at 22 px / weight 500 / -0.44 px tracking. Below it a two-cell date input row (`CHECK-IN` / `CHECKOUT` with `Add date` placeholder, the cells share a single bordered rectangle split by an inner vertical 1 px line), followed by a `GUESTS` selector with a `1 guest` value and a chevron-down. The gradient `Check availability` button caps the card. The card stays sticky as the page scrolls.
**States:** default sampled. Date-selected state (where the header becomes a per-night price) not captured.

### Date input field (booking card)
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/rooms/51429977` — `CHECK-IN` / `CHECKOUT` cells in the reservation card
**Description:** `background: #FFFFFF`, `border: 1px solid #B0B0B0` on the wrapping cell (matches `--brand-border-strong`), `border-radius: 0px` (sharp on the inner cells), label set above the placeholder at 10 px / weight 600 / `text-transform: uppercase`, placeholder `Add date` at 14 px / weight 400. The two cells share a single wrapping rounded outer container (`border-radius: 12px` on the outer) — the inner seam between `CHECK-IN` and `CHECKOUT` is a 1 px vertical hairline, not a separate border.
**States:** default sampled. Open-calendar state not captured.

### Calendar / date picker
**Status:** current (referenced by the booking card; not opened during this audit so the picker itself is described from prior live use of the brand)
**Live source:** not opened in this session — would need a click to surface
**Description:** Two-month side-by-side calendar grid; each day cell ~`40 × 40 px` with `border-radius: 50%` highlight on hover; selected range fills the interior days with `--brand-surface-strong` and rounds the endpoints to full circles. Documented from prior catalog use; **flag as `status: described-from-prior-knowledge`** until a re-capture clicks into the picker.

### Footer link block
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/` — bottom of the homepage
**Description:** Five-column grid (`Support` / `Hosting` / `Airbnb` / `Newsroom` / brand block on the left), `padding: 3rem 1.5rem 2rem`, `background: rgb(247, 247, 247)` (uses `--brand-surface-strong`). Column titles at 13 px / weight 600, links below at 14 px / weight 400 in `--brand-body`. Bottom-row legal strip carries `© 2026 Airbnb, Inc.` + `Terms · Sitemap · Privacy · Your Privacy Choices`, separated by middle dots (the brand's signature footer separator).
**States:** default sampled.

### Translation / language modal
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/rooms/51429977` — appears on first load of a listing page
**Description:** Centred modal, `background: #FFFFFF`, `border-radius: 24px`, `padding: 2rem`, no border, soft drop shadow. Carries a small Rausch-tinted illustration glyph (a translation icon with a small pink badge) at top, then a heading at ~24 px / weight 600, a body paragraph, and a single `Translation settings` link below — no buttons, no close-other-than-X. The close X sits at the top-left corner inside a 32 × 32 circular hit area.
**States:** open sampled.

### Mascot / error illustration (404 / oops)
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/rooms/53286866` (invalid ID) — Airbnb's `Oops!` 404
**Description:** A two-column layout with an "Oops!" heading on the left set at ~ 80 px / weight 700, an explanatory paragraph below it, and a vertical list of helpful links (`Home / Search / Help / Traveling on Airbnb / Hosting on Airbnb / Trust & Safety / Sitemap`) styled as bare anchors with the link tint `#222` on hover. The illustration to the right is a teal-dressed character holding a multi-colour ice-cream cone — peach skin, teal `rgb(35, 165, 170)` dress, red `rgb(202, 65, 90)` accent stripe on the dress, yellow ice-cream lightning bolt. Identifiable Airbnb 404 surface, retained for years across redesigns. **Not currently represented in the preview-template.**
**States:** sampled.

### "Sticky" topnav variants
**Status:** current
**Live source:** all sampled pages — the topnav stays fixed at the top of the viewport
**Description:** Two skins:
1. Marketing skin (homepage / experiences / help) — full-height `96 px` bar with the wordmark left, tabs centre, action cluster right. Bottom border is `1px solid #DDDDDD`.
2. Host / conversion skin (host/homes, host/experiences, aircover-for-hosts) — same height, but tabs collapse to a single text link (`Ready to Airbnb it?`) and the gradient CTA fills the right slot. No bottom border.
3. Listing-detail skin — height drops to 80 px, the wordmark anchors left and the compact search pill takes the centre. Action cluster reduces to `Become a host · globe · hamburger`. (This is the "search has been collapsed" variant noted above.)
**States:** default sampled per page.

### Wordmark glyph (Bélo)
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/` topnav, every page topnav, brand glyph in the brand mark
**Description:** The Airbnb Bélo — abstract heart/person/location glyph in solid Rausch `#ff385c` paired with the `airbnb` wordmark to its right in matching Rausch. Wordmark sets the typeface at Cereal weight 700, slight letter-spacing. On the AirCover page the wordmark drops the wordmark text and only the Bélo glyph remains (logo-mark only variant).
**States:** default sampled.

### Mobile-menu hamburger / user-menu
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/` topnav rightmost cluster — paired with the globe icon
**Description:** Pill-shaped wrapper `border-radius: 9999px`, `padding: 0.5rem 0.75rem`, holding a hamburger SVG left + a circular avatar right. The avatar is a 32 px circle filled with `rgb(242, 242, 242)` and a chevron-down placeholder when signed out. On hover the wrapper gains a `box-shadow: 0 2px 6px rgba(0,0,0,0.06)`.
**States:** default sampled.

### "Become a host" pill (host marketing skin)
**Status:** current (variant of "Tertiary text-link CTA")
**Live source:** `/host/homes` headers
**Description:** The `Get started` gradient CTA replaces the text-link variant on host-marketing pages. The text-link variant survives on the public-facing marketing pages.

### Spinner / skeleton state (experience cards loading)
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/experiences` — first paint
**Description:** Card-shaped grey rectangles with the same `1/1` ratio as the live photo, with two skinny grey bars below for the title and subtitle. Background uses `--brand-hairline-soft` for the rectangles. No motion observed in the sample (a CSS shimmer may exist; not captured statically).
**States:** loading sampled.

### Pricing tier card (catalogue convention)
**Status:** not-observed-2026-05
**Live source:** the brand does not currently expose a pricing tier table on `airbnb.com` — Airbnb does not sell tiered subscriptions to consumers; host fees are documented in long-form prose on `/help/article/...` pages. The `preview-template.html` ships a three-tier pricing block as a token demo, which is appropriate for a *catalog* (the slot exists in shadcn-semantic), but it is not a surface the live brand owns.
**Description:** n/a from live audit. Retain as a slot in preview, mark as "token-demo only" in any future authoring.

### Avatar circle
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/rooms/51429977` — host card under the listing title
**Description:** 56 px circle (`border-radius: 50%`), `border: 1px solid #DDDDDD` if no photo present, no fill on hover. Host photos fill the circle directly; when no photo is set the avatar shows the host's first initial in `#222` on a `#F2F2F2` fill.
**States:** default sampled.

### Toast / banner — Claude-in-Chrome system overlay
**Status:** environment-injected — not a brand component
**Live source:** all sampled pages — `Claude is active in this tab group` toast at bottom of viewport
**Description:** This is the MCP browser's own injected overlay, not a piece of brand chrome. Noted here so the screenshots in `temp/brand-refs/` are clean to read.
**States:** n/a — not authored by brand.

### Inline globe / language picker (icon button)
**Status:** current
**Live source:** every sampled page topnav
**Description:** 40 × 40 px circular button with a globe glyph; clicking opens the language modal. Same `background: #F2F2F2` as the hamburger button. Visually balances the gradient CTA on the right edge of host pages.
**States:** default sampled.

### Footer legal nav
**Status:** current
**Live source:** `/` footer-legal block
**Description:** Single horizontal row with copyright + middle-dot-separated links (`Terms · Sitemap · Privacy`), language switcher + currency switcher on the right. `border-top: 1px solid var(--brand-hairline-soft)`, `padding-top: 1.5rem`. Type at 13 px / `font-family: ui-monospace`. (The mono fallback here is the only place on the live site we observe a mono treatment outside of `/help` input chrome.)
**States:** default sampled.

**Note on screenshot persistence:** the `mcp__claude-in-chrome__computer` action returns inline-image IDs only and does NOT write `*.png` files to `temp/brand-refs/`. The brief calls for `mcp__chrome-devtools__take_screenshot` with `filePath`, which is not available in this environment. The screenshot IDs above persist only inside this conversation. A re-capture from a session that has `mcp__chrome-devtools__*` available should write the same eight surfaces to `temp/brand-refs/airbnb-style-live-{home,experiences,host-homes,host-experiences,listing,help,aircover,404}-light.png`. See §Known gaps.

## §6 Notes

- **No real dark mode.** Every sampled URL ships light-canvas only. The catalog's `[data-theme="dark"]` override in `tokens.css` is plausible (warm-near-black instead of the synthesised pure inversion), but it represents the app's product chrome — not the marketing site, which has no documented dark mode.
- **The brand glyph is monochrome Rausch, not gradient.** The wordmark and Bélo ride at solid `#ff385c` on every page. The gradient is the CTA-fill identity; the wordmark is the wordmark identity. Don't conflate.
- **Star ratings are ink black, not gold.** Worth re-emphasising — every other consumer marketplace uses warm-yellow filled stars; Airbnb's filled star is `#222`. The token `--brand-star-rating: oklch(0.2520 0 0)` is correct.
- **The marketing topnav has *three* tab cells with custom illustrated icons.** Homes (cabin), Experiences (hot-air balloon), Services (bell). Each icon is a 32 × 32 multi-colour SVG, not a monochrome glyph. The preview-template currently emits monochrome `__DESIGN_SYSTEM_NAME__` text tabs without the illustrations — this is a deliberate simplification (we don't carry Airbnb's licensed SVG assets) but worth noting as a known visual departure.
- **The category-bar (`/s/homes` segmented filter strip)** that used to live below the topnav has been retired site-wide in 2025 — Airbnb replaced it with the three top-level tabs. The earlier preview-template carries no category bar and that decision is now correct, but the historical record should note the change.
- **The Airbnb Luxe and Airbnb Plus sub-brand surfaces are gone.** Tokens for `--brand-luxe` and `--brand-plus` are retained in `tokens.css` as archival entries. If you remove them, do it in a separate audit pass with a note in the tokens file header.
- **CTA fill is shape-dependent.** Listing-page primary CTAs are gradient pills at radius 999 px; host- and AirCover-page primary CTAs are gradient rounded-rects at radius 8 px. Both fills are identical (three-stop Bellini→Babu). When authoring a preview, pick which surface you're standing in front of before picking the radius.
- **Cereal display tracking is the typographic move that carries the brand.** Every display heading sits at -1.8 to -2.4 px tracking. Without it the brand reads like generic SaaS Sans — the tightness is what makes Cereal "look like Airbnb."

## §Known gaps

- **No persisted PNGs in `temp/brand-refs/`** because the available MCP returns inline image IDs only. A future cycle running with `mcp__chrome-devtools__*` available should re-capture the eight URLs above with `filePath="temp/brand-refs/airbnb-style-live-<surface>-light.png"`.
- **No dark-mode screenshots.** The brief asks for both colour schemes; the live site is light-canonical with no `prefers-color-scheme: dark` override that I could detect from a fast inspect. Without `mcp__chrome-devtools__emulate` (not available in this environment) I cannot force the dark scheme on Airbnb's stylesheet.
- **Did not exercise interactive states** — hover / focus / pressed on the gradient CTA, open-state on the date picker, signed-in topnav, the experiences detail page, the host onboarding flow (post-`Get started`). Each is a separate sample run and would deepen the component dictionary by another 5–8 entries.
- **`/trust` redirects to `/aircover-for-hosts`** and AirCover is the closest surface to a "Trust" inventory we have. The historical `/trust` page (a community-safety hub) appears retired in the May 2026 site map.
- **Calendar / date picker chrome described from prior knowledge, not from this session's live capture.** Flagged in the component entry — a click into the picker would surface the actual day-cell / range-selection chrome.

## §Cross-check against `tokens.css`

Read `tokens.css` after authoring this brief, did not consult it during. Discrepancies (live wins; reconciliation downstream):

- **Missing token: `--brand-primary-gradient`.** The Bellini→Babu three-stop gradient is the primary CTA fill on listing, host, and AirCover pages. `tokens.css` carries only the solid Rausch `--primary` and a hover-pressed `--brand-primary-active`. The gradient itself is acknowledged in a comment but has no token. **Recommend adding a `--brand-primary-gradient` (or three discrete `--brand-primary-stop-{1,2,3}` tokens) and updating `[data-variant="primary"]` in `preview-template.html` to use the gradient.**
- **`--primary` is still positioned as "the singular CTA fill."** It is not, on the current live site — it is the *icon-tint accent* and the *homepage search-pill submit orb* fill. The CTA fill is the gradient. Token name remains correct; its role in the preview's primary-button needs to flip from "background" to "accent ring / icon-tint / search orb."
- **`--primary-foreground` set to `oklch(0.1500 0 0)` (dark ink on Rausch).** Token comment justifies this as "white on Rausch lands at 3.51:1, below WCAG AA." This is mathematically true, **but the live brand uses white text on Rausch and on the gradient** every time — see the `Reserve` / `Get started` / `List your home` buttons. So the brand has accepted the contrast tradeoff. The token's defensive override (white → dark) breaks visual parity with the live brand. **Recommend reverting `--primary-foreground` to `oklch(1 0 0)` to match the live site, and accepting the AA finding as an audit-known divergence.**
- **`--brand-luxe` and `--brand-plus`.** Live: `status: not-observed-2026-05`. Retained as archival values; no change needed unless an audit cycle decides to drop archived sub-brand tokens.
- **Dark-mode block.** `[data-theme="dark"]` overrides look reasonable for an app-style dark mode (warm near-black canvas, light foreground, Rausch primary preserved). The live marketing site does not ship this; the override represents the product app's dark chrome as best we can know it.
- **`--brand-muted-soft: oklch(0.5200 0 0)`** with a comment noting the darken-from-0.66 for WCAG AA. Sampled live placeholder copy lands close to the original `0.66` (a lighter grey). This is a legitimate utility-neutral tune; no change needed.
- **`--brand-star-rating: oklch(0.2520 0 0)`** matches live: filled star is ink black. Correct.
- **Radius tokens.** `--radius-md: 14px` matches the property-card photo radius (live: 12 px) within 2 px — close enough that I would not retune. `--radius-lg: 20px` does not have a direct live match — the booking card on listing detail uses `border-radius: 12px`. Consider lowering `--radius-lg` to `16px` if a closer match matters; the catalog convention is to round to multiples of 4 anyway.
- **`--radius-xl: 32px`** is what the preview uses for the round-pill button. Live primary CTA pill is `border-radius: 999px` (a true pill, not a 32 px corner). The 32 px choice in the preview is a fine readable visual approximation — but the gradient CTA on the live site is genuinely full-pill, not a wide rounded-rect.

Net: the token file is closer to the live brand than the preview-template is. The preview shows solid Rausch where the live brand shows a gradient, and rounds the CTA corners to 32 px where the live site uses 999 px on the listing-page variant and 8 px on the host-page variant. The simplest reconciliation is a primary-CTA gradient token + a per-surface radius override in the template.
