## When to Use

Use this skill in active trading firm operations, proprietary trading accounts, and quant fund cash management engines. Active individual traders and pass-through trading entities (LLC, S-Corp) do not have W-2 wage withholding on trading capital gains. To avoid IRS underpayment penalties (IRC Sec 6654), traders must schedule quarterly estimated tax payments (April 15, June 15, September 15, January 15) using **Safe Harbor Rules** ($110\%$ of prior year tax for $\text{AGI} > \$150\text{k}$, or $90\%$ of current year tax).

## Prerequisites

- Prior year tax metrics (`prior_year_tax_liability_usd`, `prior_year_agi_usd`).
- Projected current year trading net income ($P\&L$) and effective tax rate (e.g. 37% federal + state).
- Cumulative estimated tax payments already made.

## Workflow

1. **IRS Safe Harbor Requirement Computation**:
   - Determine prior year multiplier: If $\text{Prior AGI} > \$150,000 \implies 1.10$, else $1.00$.
   - $\text{Target}_{\text{prior}} = \text{Prior Tax Liability} \times \text{Multiplier}$.
   - $\text{Target}_{\text{current}} = \text{Projected Current Tax} \times 0.90$.
   - $\text{Required Annual Safe Harbor} = \min(\text{Target}_{\text{prior}}, \text{Target}_{\text{current}})$.
2. **Quarterly Installment Scheduling**:
   - $\text{Quarterly Requirement} = \frac{\text{Required Annual Safe Harbor}}{4.0}$.
   - Map payment deadlines: Q1 (April 15), Q2 (June 15), Q3 (September 15), Q4 (January 15).
3. **Trading Capital Reserve Lockup**:
   - Reserve tax funds out of trading equity to prevent margin calls or capital lockups on tax due dates.
4. **Audit Report Generation**: Output structured `EstimatedTaxScheduleReport`.

## Common Pitfalls

- **Failing 110% High-Income Safe Harbor Rule**: Assuming 100% of prior year tax covers underpayment penalties when AGI exceeded \$150,000.
- **Draining Tax Reserves for New Positions**: Re-investing set-aside tax reserves into active trading positions, triggering forced liquidations when quarterly tax payments come due.
- **Ignoring June 15 Q2 Short Window**: Forgetting that Q2 estimated tax is due June 15 (only 2 months after Q1 April 15).

## Verification

- Instantiate `EstimatedTaxSchedulerEngine`. Input prior year tax = \$50,000, prior AGI = \$200,000 ($> \$150\text{k}$). Projected current year tax = \$90,000. Compute prior year safe harbor ($110\% \times \$50,000 = \$55,000$) vs current year ($90\% \times \$90,000 = \$81,000$). Verify engine selects \$55,000 safe harbor and schedules \$13,750 per quarter across Q1-Q4 deadlines.
- Run `python scripts/test_estimated_tax_payment_scheduling_for_active_trading_income.py`.
