# AgentChef

AgentChef (formerly Codex Chef) is an unofficial, cross-platform setup kit for
two terminal coding agents: OpenAI Codex CLI and Anthropic Claude Code. It
packages reviewed global working agreements, conservative config templates,
specialist subagents, curated skills, MCP defaults, a local plugin, dry-run
installers, and validation gates. It installs for both targets: the
Codex CLI surface and the Claude Code surface (`--target codex|claude|both`;
see docs/claude-surfaces.md and docs/release-notes.md for what each release
ships).

## What It Installs

The reviewed install surface is described by `manifests/install-plan.json` and
previewed by:

```bash
node scripts/plan-install.mjs --all --json --redact-paths
```

The default managed Codex targets are:

- `~/.codex/AGENTS.md`
- `~/.codex/config.toml`
- `~/.codex/agents/*.toml`
- `~/.codex/rules/default.rules`
- `~/.codex/plugins/agentchef`
- `~/.agents/plugins/marketplace.json`
- `~/.agents/plugins/sources/agentchef` (the `agentchef` plugin source; every
  AgentChef skill lives under its `skills/` folder)

Optional global Git guards are not part of the silent default. They require the
explicit `-InstallGitGuards` or `--install-git-guards` flag.

## Core Capabilities

- 21 specialist Codex subagent role definitions.
- 10 bundled skills in the `agentchef` plugin (`$agentchef:<skill>` in Codex,
  `/agentchef:<skill>` in Claude Code):
  - `adaptive-agent-routing`
  - `agentchef-operator`
  - `context-budget-planner`
  - `evidence-research`
  - `external-review-workflow`
  - `fetch`
  - `gptpro`
  - `gptpro-handoff`
  - `offline-diagram-triplet`
  - `seo`
- 18 reviewed pinned skills in `catalog/skills.json` and
  `catalog/skills-lock.json`, written into the same plugin source by the
  full install.
- Conservative MCP defaults for 14 cataloged servers in
  `catalog/mcp-servers.json` and `templates/codex/config.*.toml` (Codex on by
  default: `openaiDeveloperDocs`, `serena`); the Claude Code plugin ships
  `context7` and `serena` through `plugins/agentchef/mcp/claude.mcp.json`.
  Playwright and Chrome DevTools are off by default and added per project
  when a task needs browser evidence.
- Bilingual task-focused knowledge base under `kb/`.
- No-write installer previews for PowerShell and Bash.
- Repo-only doctor command:

```bash
npm run codex:doctor
```

## Safe Defaults

Do not assume this repo enables external accounts, production systems, broad
filesystem access, deployment tokens, GitHub publishing, or browser session
imports by default. Authenticated and high-risk connectors stay disabled until a
task explicitly needs them and the user approves the access.

The installer does not commit, push, create releases, deploy, publish packages,
rotate secrets, or change GitHub repository settings.

## Source-Backed Comparison Policy

High-signal repositories and ecosystems are treated as design input, not as
trusted configuration to copy wholesale.

Reviewed comparison sources include:

- ECC: https://github.com/affaan-m/ECC
- OpenAI skills: https://github.com/openai/skills
- Anthropic skills: https://github.com/anthropics/skills
- Awesome Copilot: https://github.com/github/awesome-copilot
- MCP servers: https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers
- Playwright MCP: https://github.com/microsoft/playwright-mcp
- Browser Use: https://github.com/browser-use/browser-use
- SuperClaude Framework: https://github.com/SuperClaude-Org/SuperClaude_Framework

Adopted patterns are mapped to the smallest Codex-native surface:

- Durable repo behavior -> `AGENTS.md`
- Reusable workflows -> skills
- Distributed workflow bundles -> plugins
- Live external context -> MCP/connectors
- Specialist review or evidence work -> subagents
- Command exceptions -> rules
- Lifecycle automation -> hooks after security review
- Push, release, deploy, external upload -> explicit approval gate

Rejected default patterns include broad cross-harness sync, enabled
authenticated connectors, prompt-injection lifecycle hooks, cookie import,
tunnels, auto-commit, auto-deploy, raw credential handling, and unreviewed large
skill catalogs.

## Official Codex Source Route

Use the current OpenAI Codex manual and official docs as source of truth for
Codex surfaces, AGENTS.md, skills, plugins, MCP, hooks, rules, permissions,
config, subagents, noninteractive mode, and Windows behavior.

## Verification

Use the repository gates before claiming the setup is ready:

```bash
npm run check
npm run verify:skills:online
git diff --check
gitleaks detect --redact --no-banner --no-git --verbose
```

PowerShell dry-run:

```powershell
.\scripts\install.ps1 -All -Force -WhatIf
```

Bash or WSL dry-run:

```bash
./scripts/install.sh --all --force --dry-run
```

## Agent Instructions

For work inside this repository, read `AGENTS.md` first. Then prefer the
repository scripts and validators over ad hoc edits.

Do not add secrets, local user paths, auth files, session state, build output,
archives, generated scratch data, or dependency folders to tracked source.

Do not weaken validation, approval gates, sandbox defaults, or disabled
connector defaults to make a check pass.
