--- name: Safari description: Teaching notes for Safari — the toolbar, tabs, sidebar, reader and privacy controls, and what to point at. apps: [com.apple.Safari] surfaces: [talk] --- ## Layout A single unified toolbar runs across the top of the window: sidebar button at the far left, back/forward arrows next to it, then the address and search field in the center. To the right of the address field sit the share button, the new-tab plus button and the tab overview grid. Tabs appear as a strip under the toolbar (compact layout puts them inside it). The sidebar, when open, is a left panel with Tab Groups, Bookmarks, Reading List and Shared with You. The menu bar has Safari, File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Window, Develop. ## Common tasks - New tab: command-T; new window: command-N; private window: shift-command-N. - Reopen closed tab: shift-command-T, or History > Reopen Last Closed Tab. - Find on page: command-F, the search bar appears just under the toolbar. - Bookmark the page: command-D, or Bookmarks > Add Bookmark. - Reader view: the small paragraph icon at the left end of the address field, or shift-command-R. - Zoom: command-plus / command-minus; command-0 resets. - Show Web Inspector: enable the Develop menu in Safari > Settings > Advanced, then option-command-I. - Clear history: History > Clear History, choose a range. ## Pointing hints - "Where do I type the address?" — point at the center of the address field in the toolbar. - "How do I open the sidebar / tab groups?" — point at the sidebar button at the far left of the toolbar. - "How do I see all my tabs?" — point at the tab overview grid at the far right of the toolbar. - "How do I share this?" — point at the share button (square with an up arrow) right of the address field. - "Where are downloads?" — point at the downloads arrow that appears near the right end of the toolbar once something has downloaded, otherwise mention option-command-L. - "How do I turn on reader?" — point at the left end of the address field. ## Gotchas - The toolbar layout depends on Safari > Settings > Tabs: compact puts tabs and address in one row, separate puts them on two rows. - The Develop menu is hidden until enabled in Settings > Advanced. - Extensions are managed in Safari > Settings > Extensions; their buttons appear left of the address field. - Private windows have a dark address field, which is the quickest way to tell them apart.
