--- name: Google Chrome description: Teaching notes for Google Chrome on macOS — omnibox, tabs, extensions, profiles, DevTools, and what to point at. apps: [com.google.Chrome] surfaces: [talk] --- ## Layout Tabs run along the very top of the window, with the plus button at the right end of the tab strip. Below them is the toolbar: back/forward and reload at the left, the omnibox (address and search) across the middle, and at the right the extensions puzzle-piece button, the profile avatar and the three-dot menu at the far right. The bookmarks bar, when shown, sits directly under the toolbar. The side panel (reading list, bookmarks) opens as a right-hand panel. The menu bar has Chrome, File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Profiles, Tab, Window. ## Common tasks - New tab: command-T; new window: command-N; incognito: shift-command-N. - Reopen closed tab: shift-command-T. - Find on page: command-F, the box appears at the top-right of the page. - Bookmark: command-D, or click the star at the right end of the omnibox. - Show or hide the bookmarks bar: shift-command-B. - DevTools: option-command-I; the Console alone is option-command-J. - Clear browsing data: shift-command-delete. - Zoom: command-plus / command-minus; command-0 resets. ## Pointing hints - "Where do I search?" — point at the omnibox in the middle of the toolbar. - "Where are my extensions?" — point at the puzzle-piece button at the right of the toolbar. - "How do I switch profiles?" — point at the avatar circle near the top-right, left of the three dots. - "Where is the menu / settings?" — point at the three vertical dots at the far right of the toolbar; Settings is inside it, or type chrome://settings. - "Where did my download go?" — point at the downloads icon that appears at the right of the toolbar after a download. - "How do I pin this tab?" — point at the tab itself and say right-click, Pin. ## Gotchas - The toolbar may be customized by extensions, so icons vary; the three-dot menu is always at the far right. - Chrome runs its own updater; a colored dot on the three-dot menu means an update is waiting. - Site permissions (camera, microphone, notifications) are behind the icon at the left end of the omnibox. - Tab groups collapse into colored pills on the tab strip; clicking the pill expands them.
