# Agent Protocols

Connect agents and tools through the protocol required by the peers. A2A exchanges agent tasks, MCP exposes tools and context, and ACP connects agent clients such as editors to agents; these protocols are not interchangeable.

## Workflow

1. Identify the protocol, peer role, transport, supported version, and authentication contract. Inspect the locked Python SDK before using examples or generated schemas.
1. Read only the A2A, MCP, or ACP guide needed below. Use [mcp-setup](../mcp-setup/SKILL.md) for registering an existing MCP server in a host; registration is separate from implementing a client or server.
1. Exercise a deterministic local client/server round trip, invalid input, unsupported capabilities, cancellation, and transport failure. Verify task/session ownership and recovery where persistence is advertised.
1. Discover official skills through the referenced maintainer sources, review them through the [vendor policy](../agent-project/references/vendor-skills.md), and install only a relevant project-scoped selection. A protocol capability named skill is not an installable Agent Skill.
1. Add another protocol only for an actual integration need; identify its authority and interoperability boundary before adding a reference.
