- MCP Gateway sits between your AI client and your tools. Instead of loading hundreds of tool definitions into every request, the AI gets a compact Meta-MCP surface (14 tools minimum, 16 in the README benchmark scenario, 17 when webhook status is surfaced) and discovers the right backend tool on demand.

## Install
brew install MikkoParkkola/tap/mcp-gateway
## Configure
Create gateway.yaml:
server:
port: 39400
meta_mcp:
enabled: true
failsafe:
circuit_breaker:
enabled: true
backends:
tavily:
command: "npx -y @anthropic/mcp-server-tavily"
description: "Web search"
env:
TAVILY_API_KEY: "${TAVILY_API_KEY}"
## Run
mcp-gateway --config gateway.yaml
## Connect AI Client
Add to MCP config:
{"mcpServers":{"gateway":{"type":"http","url":"http://localhost:39400/mcp"}}}
## Base Discovery Tools (4)
- These four discovery tools are always present. The minimum operational surface has 14 tools. The README benchmark scenario has 16, or 17 when webhook status is surfaced.

- gateway_search_tools(query) -- Semantic search across all backend tools by keyword
- gateway_invoke(server, tool, arguments) -- Execute a tool on any backend
- gateway_list_servers() -- List all backends with status
- gateway_list_tools(server) -- List tools from a specific backend
## Usage Pattern
1. gateway_search_tools(query="your keyword") -- find tools matching your need
2. gateway_invoke(server="X", tool="Y", arguments={...}) -- call the tool
## Key Features
- Live task result: the checked-in 16-run sample found no completed-task token saving; across the 50-, 100-, 200-, and 500-tool rows, the meta path used 1.2-16.1% more input tokens
- REST API to MCP: drop a YAML capability file or import OpenAPI spec, no code needed
- 100+ built-in capabilities: weather, Wikipedia, GitHub, stock quotes, package tracking
- Hot reload: change config without losing AI session
- Circuit breakers, retry, rate limiting, health checks
- Web dashboard at /ui, operator dashboard at /dashboard
- Security: bearer tokens, API keys, per-client tool scopes, credential redaction, prompt injection detection
- Transports: stdio, Streamable HTTP, SSE, WebSocket
- MCP version: 2025-11-25
## Backend Types
- stdio: @anthropic/mcp-server-tavily, @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem, etc.
- HTTP: any Streamable HTTP MCP server
- SSE: Pieces, LangChain, etc.
- Capability YAML: any REST API without building an MCP server
