# Backends
Rules for `src/srtctl/backends/`. Every consumer asks a backend through `Backend` (`backends/base.py`); see the Design Rules in the root `CLAUDE.md`.
## Adding a New Backend
1. Create `backends/<name>.py` with a frozen dataclass inheriting `Backend`. Keep schema fields, including the bound `roles`, on the concrete dataclass.
2. Supply `type` and implement the required abstract launch hooks:
- `allocate_endpoints()` - Logical worker allocation
- `endpoints_to_processes()` - Physical process mapping; every port through `NodePortAllocator`
- `build_worker_command(process, runtime)` - Command construction
3. Inherit optional defaults and override only where the engine needs different behavior:
- `get_srun_config()` - Defaults to per-process launching without MPI; override MPI settings and launch strategy as needed
- `get_config_for_mode(mode)` / `get_environment_for_mode(mode)` - Read the bound role's arguments and environment
- `get_process_environment(process)` - Defaults to `{}`; override for per-process env derived from `Process` ports
- `mooncake_kv_store` / `get_mooncake_worker_env(...)` - Default to `None` / `{}`

This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved.
