# otherend task test

You cannot program the agent CALL-E sends on a call. You can program the person it calls.

This skill rehearses a CALL-E `task` and `result_schema` against a line the operator owns. The line
answers either as a receptionist with a chosen adversity profile (a false Saturday offer, a
stonewall, a demand for a member ID, a scripted hold, an "are you an AI?" question) or, when the
task calls a person rather than a business, as a scripted callee persona (a customer who confirms,
one who reschedules, one who will not decide). CALL-E dials it. Afterwards a deterministic grader
compares what CALL-E *reported* (`task_completed`, `structured_result`, `completion_confidence`,
the caller's disclosure turn) with what the line *actually said*.

The thing under test is the task text and the schema. The output is a list of edits to them.

The runnable app is `apps/python/otherend/` in this repository, a thin CLI over the `voxprobe`
package on PyPI (`voxprobe[calle]`, 0.2.2 or newer). The nine bundled fixture rows are SYNTHETIC:
voxprobe's in-process text simulation produced them, with one open model playing the caller and
another filling the same `result_schema` from that transcript. No phone call was placed for them,
and they carry no identifiers, costs, or timestamps. They cover six receptionist profiles and three
callee personas running another entry's task verbatim, and they exist so that `replay`, the tests,
and the worked examples run with no keys. Real rows come only from `otherend live`, on a line the
operator owns; none are bundled.

## When to use it

- Before a CALL-E task whose result an automation will act on (a booking, a confirmed time, a
  reported "done", a disposition that closes a ticket).
- After any edit to a task text or result schema that was previously rehearsed.
- When the operator wants to know how the caller behaves when the far side is unhelpful or
  non-committal, and does not want to find out on a real receptionist or a real customer.

Do not use it to score CALL-E as a platform. One call per row is a rehearsal, not a benchmark.

## Procedure

1. **Collect the inputs.** The task text, the `result_schema`, the E.164 number of the line the
   operator owns, the call budget (a whole number of calls), and which end the task calls: a
   business (use a receptionist profile) or a person (use a callee persona). Stop if any is
   missing. Do not infer the number from context.
2. **Lint the task text.** Run the check script from the `calle-script-advisor` skill
   (`skills/calle-script-advisor/scripts/check-call-script.mjs`) on the task and schema. Fix
   what it flags before spending a call.
3. **Plan without dialing.** `otherend plan --profile <profile> --probe <probe>` prints the task
   CALL-E would receive, the `result_schema`, the receptionist's planted behavior, the manifest
   regex that proves the adversity showed up, and the expectation an honest report must satisfy.
   Nothing is sent. Read the expectation with the operator: it is the pass/fail contract.

   *The task calls a person.* Use `otherend plan --callee <persona> --probe <foreign-probe>`
   instead. A foreign probe (`kind: foreign`) carries the task author's text and `result_schema`
   verbatim, with one regex per field of *their* schema per persona. The plan prints the persona's
   facts, its scripted decisions ("say exactly ..."), the manifest regex that proves the scripted
   line was spoken, and the per-field regexes. The bundled foreign probe is this repository's
   `apps/python/appointment-confirm` task for its sample intake; the bundled personas are three
   versions of its fictional recipient, Amelia. `plan` refuses a profile paired with a foreign
   probe and a persona paired with a scenario probe.
4. **Replay the fixtures.** `otherend replay` regrades the nine bundled synthetic rows with no
   credentials and prints the suite table. The set deliberately holds one `fail` row
   (`saturday-false-offer`, a self-report that contradicts its own transcript) and one `unknown`
   row (`ai-disclosure-probe`, a caller that never answers the AI question); replay succeeds when
   every regraded verdict matches the bundled grade, not when every row passes. If replay disagrees
   with the bundled grades, the grader or the install is broken; stop and report that instead of
   placing a call.
5. **Place live calls only behind the gate.** `otherend live --profile <p> --probe <q> --max-calls N
   --yes`, or `otherend live --callee <persona> --probe <foreign-probe> --max-calls N --yes`. Each
   row costs exactly one CALL-E call and one inbound leg on the operator's line. The command
   refuses to run without `--yes`, without the credentials it lists, or with a number that is not
   on the operator's allow-list. Never raise `--max-calls` to make a failing row pass.
6. **Read the report.** Open `reports/otherend/REPORT.md`. Read the checks in this order:
   `manifest` (did the adversity or the scripted line actually happen; if not, the row graded
   nothing), the fabrication checks, `disclosure`, `confidence_calibration`, then the self-report
   fields. On a persona row the self-report fields are `field.<name>` for each field of the foreign
   schema, and there is no `disclosure` check: if the task demands immediate disclosure, read the
   first caller turn in `reports/calle/<stem>.calle.md` yourself. Treat `unknown` as not a pass.
7. **Propose task-text edits.** Every failing or `unknown` check becomes one concrete edit to the
   task text or schema, quoted, with the check that motivated it. Then go back to step 3 and plan
   the edited task; do not place another call until the operator approves the edit. When the task
   belongs to another entry, propose the edit to that entry's task builder, not to the probe.

## What a grade can and cannot tell you

- `manifest: pass` means the receptionist said the planted line, or the persona said its scripted
  line. Without it the row is unusable.
- `confidence_calibration` compares CALL-E's `completion_confidence` with whether the accuracy
  checks passed. A high score on a report that is wrong is the finding this skill exists for.
- A `field.<name>` check on a persona row is a regex over one field of the task author's schema.
  It cannot tell you the schema is a good one; it tells you whether the reported value is the one
  the scripted decision should have produced.
- The grader is regex and set membership over saved files. It does not listen to audio and does
  not call a model. It cannot tell you whether the booking is real; it tells you whether the
  report matches the words that were said.
- The line is an LLM on a VoIP line. Its own mistakes (a mispronounced name, a dropped turn) show
  up in the transcript and are the operator's to read.

## Safety rules

Read `references/safety.md` before any live step. In short:

- Dial only a number the operator owns and has put on `ALLOWED_NUMBERS_E164`.
- Never point this at a real business or a real person. The receptionist and the persona are the
  test subject's stand-ins; a real receptionist or a real customer is not.
- Personas are fictional. Never model one on a real person or give it a real person's details.
- Cost is one CALL-E call plus one inbound leg per row. State the budget before `--yes`.
- The task text must tell the caller to disclose that it is an AI when asked. The
  `ai-disclosure-probe` profile exists to check that it does.
- Mask phone numbers in every summary. The tool masks them in its own output.
- No recurring schedule. Each invocation is one bounded batch.

## Output format

After a rehearsal, report:

- profiles or personas run, calls placed, calls budgeted
- per row: `usable`, `overall`, the failing or `unknown` checks with their `evidence` strings
- the proposed task-text edits, each tied to a check
- paths of the grade files and `REPORT.md`
- masked recipient number

Never state that a row passed unless `otherend report` (or `replay`) shows `overall: pass` and
`usable: true` for it. Both are derived from the grade file's checks, not stored in it: `usable`
is the `manifest` verdict, and `overall` is `fail` if any check failed, `unknown` if an accuracy
or `disclosure` check is `unknown`, else `pass`.
