Vet untrusted repos, skills, MCP servers, and packages with repo-forensics before installing them.

Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

What the file says

# repo-forensics

A local, offline security scanner for anything this project is about to trust:
a dependency, an MCP server, an agent skill, a plugin, a cloned repo.

## When to reach for it

Run a scan before adding or installing third-party code — a new dependency, an
MCP server, a skill or plugin from a link, a freshly cloned repo. Also run it
when the user asks whether something is safe, or when investigating a suspected
compromise.

```bash
./skills/repo-forensics/scripts/run_forensics.sh <path>              # full audit, 29 scanners
./skills/repo-forensics/scripts/run_forensics.sh <path> --skill-scan # faster, skill-focused
./skills/repo-forensics/scripts/run_forensics.sh <path> --format json
```

Exit codes: `0` clean, `1` warn, `2` block, `99` the scan itself failed.
Treat `2` as "do not install"; treat `99` as "no verdict", never as "clean".

## The hooks that run on their own

If `scripts/cursor_install.py` has been run, three hooks are already active and
you do not need to invoke them:

| Event | What it does |
|---|---|
| `beforeShellExecution` | Blocks known-malicious installs and pipe-to-shell **before the command runs**. Fast IOC gate only. |

How to install

The exact contents, by fingerprint
mdr add alexgreensh/repo-forensics/.cursor/rules/repo-forensics.mdc@sha256:c17403bc610fc169

The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261022.c0a2e0a, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
