# NotebookLM MCP + HTTP REST API
> Automate Google NotebookLM at scale. Production-grade REST API and MCP server with citation-backed Q&A, full Studio content generation (audio, video, infographic, report, presentation, data table), multi-account rotation with auto-reauth, and 45 documented HTTP endpoints. Built for researchers, automators, and AI agents.
This is the canonical entry point for LLMs (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini) discovering this project. The library exposes Google NotebookLM via two equivalent surfaces — a local HTTP REST API (port 3000 by default) for n8n / Zapier / Make / curl integrations, and an MCP server for Claude Code / Cursor / Codex agents. Both share the same browser automation backend.
The package is published to npm as `@roomi-fields/notebooklm-mcp` (current version 4.2.0, Node 22 or newer). The maintained repository lives at https://github.com/roomi-fields/notebooklm-mcp.
Two transports reach NotebookLM: its internal `batchexecute` RPC API first (10-100x faster than scraping and unaffected by interface rebrands), with a Playwright browser as an automatic fallback. Both ship permanently.
The HTTP API listens on 127.0.0.1 only. Exposing it to other machines requires `NOTEBOOKLM_API_KEY`; without one the server refuses to start on a wider address. Browser callers must be allow-listed via `NOTEBOOKLM_ALLOWED_ORIGINS`.
## Quick install
```bash
npx @roomi-fields/notebooklm-mcp@latest # MCP server (stdio)
npx -y -p @roomi-fields/notebooklm-mcp notebooklm-mcp-setup-auth # one-time Google login
```
For the REST API, clone and run the HTTP wrapper:
```bash
git clone https://github.com/roomi-fields/notebooklm-mcp.git
cd notebooklm-mcp && npm install && npm run build
npm run start:http # REST API on http://127.0.0.1:3000
```
## REST API at a glance
Single-call ask example, returns answer plus structured citations:
```bash
curl -X POST http://localhost:3000/ask \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"question": "Summarize chapter 3",
"notebook_id": "your-notebook-id",
"source_format": "json"
}'
```
Response shape:
```json
{
"success": true,
"answer": "Chapter 3 covers …",
"citations": [
{ "id": 1, "source": "thesis-ch3.pdf", "excerpt": "..." }
],
"session_id": "..."
}
```
