# AGENTS.md — Cross-CLI Canonical Instructions > **Read this file first if you are an AI agent that works in this repository.** The agent can be Claude Code, Codex CLI, Antigravity/agy, Ollama, Gemini CLI or a generic agent. This file is the one source of the instructions for each CLI. > > `evolve skills generate` renders [CLAUDE.md](CLAUDE.md) and [GEMINI.md](GEMINI.md) from it. Each file has a short overlay for its CLI and a copy of the digest section of this file. Change this file, not a rendered copy. `evolve skills check` fails when a rendered copy differs from this file. > > **Operating policy (canonical):** [docs/operations/operating-policy.md](docs/operations/operating-policy.md) has the environment-independent process rules. Each rule has the incident evidence behind it. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
