# Development rules agent guide

This directory maintains guidance for agents editing GNN. It contains no
runtime code and introduces no authority to execute external actions.

Start with [README](README.md), root [AGENTS](../AGENTS.md) and
[SPEC](../SPEC.md), then read the owning module. User instructions and current
repository contracts take precedence over historical examples.

The local [guide specification](SPEC.md) defines documentation obligations.

Keep examples runnable in their declared environment. Link to live registries,
configuration and executable gates instead of copying assumed inventories or
pass counts. Distinguish success, warning, unsupported requests, missing
optional dependencies and failures. Never prescribe forced success, implicit
backend substitution or a smaller selection than requested.

Review changes through their consumers, preserve unrelated files, and record
the actual revision, commands, outcomes and platform limits. Source/manuscript
and companion changes retain root custody obligations.

## Maintaining these rules

Give each topic one owner and synchronize [README](README.md)'s task routing.
Preserve stable paths/fragments. Link volatile versions, inventories, gates and
future work to canonical owners. Each guide has scope, required behavior and
verification; no guide creates an automatic authorization or policy loader.

Read [documentation.md](documentation.md) for checks. Determine manuscript and
companion input impact before claiming full acceptance. Read each changed guide
as a standalone instruction, and verify its commands against the public parser.
