# Evolve Loop — a brief for AI agents that write code
> You are probably an AI agent that sets up Evolve Loop for a developer. This
> page gives the mental model in plain text, and the exact commands. All of it
> is also true for humans.
## What it is
Evolve Loop is an autonomous development pipeline that repairs itself. It
drives the AI CLIs that you already run. Antigravity (`agy`) and Claude Code
come first. Codex and local Ollama models run when a routing table names them.
Each cycle has these steps:
1. Scout plans the work.
2. TDD writes a test that fails first.
3. Build makes the change, then simplifies and reviews its own diff.
4. Code review scores the change on ten quality dimensions (in shadow).
5. An independent adversarial auditor audits the diff.
6. Ship merges the change only after the audit passes.
The invariant is that a code change ships only after a test failed first,
unless the change is trivial. The floor `ship ⇒ build ∧ audit ∧ (tdd ∨ trivial)`
is compiled into the binary. A configuration cannot remove it. A document
deliverable also waives the tdd conjunct.
Current release: v22.27.0.
## Install (one line, macOS and Linux, Windows through WSL2)
curl -fsSL https://mickeyyaya.github.io/evolve-loop/install.sh | sh
- The installer verifies the release checksum and installs a static Go binary
to ~/.local/bin. It adds one PATH line to the shell rc, and it adds the line
only once.
- It installs the /evo:* skills into each AI CLI that it finds. It needs no
account and sends no telemetry. You can run it again safely.
- Pin a version: EVO_VERSION=v22.27.0 curl … | sh
- Keep the shell config: EVO_NO_MODIFY_PATH=1 curl … | sh
- Read the script first: https://github.com/mickeyyaya/evolve-loop/blob/main/install.sh
## First commands
evolve doctor # verify tmux + CLI wiring
/evo:loop --cycles 3 "your goal" # run inside your AI CLI
## Routing (one table)
One `cli_routing` table in `.evolve/policy.json` decides every dispatch.
`evolve cli-routing init|set|unset|migrate` are the only writers of the table.
`evolve cli-routing explain <agent>` prints the CLI chain of an agent.
In the table that builds Evolve Loop itself:
- agy runs first, on Gemini 3.8 Flash High.
- Deep and top seats run Claude Opus through agy (`agy-claude`), then Claude
Code.
- The integrity floor agents (auditor, adversarial review, tdd and the code
reviewer) run on Claude Code only.
The loop updates Claude Code and agy at each wave boundary. It smoke-tests each
update before the next dispatch.
## Continuous development (how you operate it)
You never stop the loop to steer it. You file a JSON item with
`evolve inbox add`, and triage takes the top of a computed rank on the next
cycle:
{"id": "fix-auth-bug", "weight": 0.9, "title": "…", "kind": "bug",
"fix": "…", "acceptance": ["regression test red-first", "…"]}
The rank adds weight, priority class, the items that it unblocks, recurrence,
age and goal. `evolve inbox rank --explain <id>` shows the parts of the score.
`evolve inbox show|list|edit|verify|withdraw` curate an item.
A failure is routed, not fatal:
- If a provider has no quota, a usage query records the evidence. The loop
benches that CLI and sends the phase to the next CLI in the chain.
- If only audit gates forced a FAIL, the build gets a bounded repair round.
- If a binary was tampered with, the ship stops, and the pin repairs itself.
- If the origin moved, the loop waits for `evolve sync-main` at the boundary.
A convergence policy is built to make every loop that repeats converge or
escalate (ADR-0126). It runs in shadow now: no loop calls it yet. It changes
the feedback, then the strategy, then the scope, and it never allows a fourth
round.
`evolve checkpoint save` saves uncommitted dev-worktree work as refs.
## Standards
- Code explains itself: the commit gate refuses a commit that adds a comment.
- Every code change is test-first, and mutation tests check the tests.
- Every landing passes a review loop with a convergence rule.
- The documentation moves to ASD-STE100 Simplified Technical English. 21 core
documents use it now, and its lint is in progress.
