Academic writing conventions — reading notes format, chapter structure, consistency rules.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
## Notes Format
Reading notes use a standardised template (`literature/reading_notes/_template_NOTES.md`) with required fields:
- **Status**: `reading` | `completed` | `integrated`
- **Relevance**: chapter and section reference (e.g. "Ch3 S3.2 — supports argument about X")
- **Thesis Connections** table: maps note points to chapters, sections, and connection types (supports / challenges / extends)
- **Key Terms** table: term, translation (if applicable), definition in context
- Direct quotes must include page numbers: `> "quote" (p.N)`
## Chapter Structure
- Chapters live in `chapters/`, named `ch{N}_{slug}.md`
- Sections numbered hierarchically: `## N.1`, `### N.1.1`
- Each chapter ends with a `## References` section (Harvard style)
- Template available at `chapters/_template.md`
## Writing Principles
- **Read first, write later** — complete reading notes for all sources before editing chapter text
- **British English** throughout thesis text (favour, analyse, behaviour, programme)
- **One notes file per source** — every PDF/text gets its own `_NOTES.md` in `literature/reading_notes/`
- Max 15 pages per read invocation; max 90 pages per conversation

How to install
mdr add yha9806/academic-writing-toolkit/.cursor/rules/academic-writing.mdc@sha256:2a744af5fa3bc158The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260427.1b9c69b, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
