<objective>
Rename Python symbol or module atomically. Coverage:
- Definition site (def/class line)
- `__all__` re-exports in `__init__.py` files
- Import call sites across all callers (fn-rdeps + symbol line-range narrowing)
- Sphinx docstring cross-refs across `.py` and `.rst`
- Optional `@deprecated` alias via pyDeprecate (`--deprecate`; requires `pyDeprecate` installed)

**Subcommands**:
- `symbol <old_qname> <new_qname>` — function, class, or method. qname = bare (`MyClass`) or qualified (`MyClass.method`) — matches against `qualified_name`, which is symbol-local; module-qualified form (`module::symbol`) is not accepted by `find-symbol`
- `module <old_module_path> <new_module_path>` — dotted path (`mypackage.old_name`). Renames file + all import lines.
**Flags**:
- `--dry-run` — print sites that would change; no edits
- `--deprecate[=<decorator>]` — symbol only: keep old name as pyDeprecate `@deprecated` wrapper → new name; requires `pyDeprecate`. Bare form derives the decorator from the symbol type; the value form pins it explicitly (`--deprecate="@deprecated_class(...)"`)
- `--since <ver>` / `--removed-in <ver>` — passed to deprecation decorator; default `"?"`
- `--remove-if-no-callers` — symbol only: delete definition when exhaustive=true + zero callers; requires confirmation
**Hard limits** (static analysis boundary — not fixable):
- `getattr(obj, "old_name")` — string not statically bound; Step 6 emits grep advisory
- Cross-repo callers — out of scope; use `--deprecate` + semver bump for public APIs
Routing: IDE/LSP rename wanting coverage preview only → run `--dry-run`. Handles 1:1 renames only.
NOT for: building index (`/codemap-py:scan-codebase`); querying without rename intent (`/codemap-py:query-code`); non-Python files; renaming symbols in ABCs/Protocols where subclass overrides exist — overrides not tracked by static import analysis; review `fn-rdeps` manually, rename overrides explicitly. **Note**: no `--index <path>` support — always uses default project index. Monorepo: a `--root <pkg>` index from `/codemap-py:scan-codebase` is not auto-resolved here (`resolve_proj_index.py` derives PROJ from git-root basename only) — confirm the resolved path via `resolve_index_env.py` before renaming, or keep `--root` usage consistent with default scans.

## Step 2: Resolve targets
- Every structural query and every rebuild in this skill goes through the gated `codemap-py` dispatcher — never the `scan-query`/`scan-index` aliases. The aliases take no read/write lease, so an ungated rebuild can race a concurrent scan mid-rename, and they are compatibility shims removed no earlier than `1.0.0`. Re-resolve `$CM` at the top of every subsequent Bash block (shell vars don't persist across Bash() calls):

The aliases lease in-engine exactly as the dispatcher does (shared read lease in the query engine, exclusive writer lease in the scan engine), so neither route can race a concurrent scan mid-rename; prefer the dispatcher because it owns the interpreter probe the aliases skip (`127` when no eligible CPython resolves, including an invalid `CODEMAP_PYTHON`), and because the aliases are deprecated compatibility shims removed no earlier than `1.0.0`. `find-symbol` returns `matches` array — each: `{name, qualified_name, type, module, path, start_line, end_line, source}` (same schema as `query-code` `symbol`). Use `path`, `start_line`, `end_line` for edits; `qualified_name` for exact-match filtering. Step 4e reads `.matches[0].type`.

- Multiple matches → invoke `AskUserQuestion` listing candidates (name, type, module, path) — ask which to rename. Then narrow the sentinel to the chosen match so every downstream `.matches[0]` read is correct by construction:

- `called_by` entries have **no line numbers** — use `codemap-py query symbol <caller>` per entry in Step 4c for line range.
