# /wise-workflow-run - the conductor
The `wise_*` tools (`wise_status`, `wise_preflight`, `wise_run`,
`wise_wait`, `wise_answer`, `wise_cancel`, `wise_nudge`, `wise_resume`)
come from the plugin's `wise-engine` MCP server; Claude Code shows them
with a server prefix. Errors return `{"error":{code,message,...}}`.
## Arguments
`$ARGUMENTS`: first token is the workflow name (empty: run
`bash ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/engine/engine.sh list-defs`, pick with
AskUserQuestion plus Abort). Remaining tokens fill the declared inputs
in order; the last declared input absorbs the rest of the line.
## 1. Init check
Call `wise_status` (no id). Workflows do not read the session profile
set by `/wise-profile`; pre-flight asks harness, model and effort
instead.
- `wise_*` tools missing, or `DAEMON_UNAVAILABLE`: print
`Run /wise-init, then retry.` and stop.
- `AUTH_REQUIRED`: print `login_cmd` verbatim and stop.
## 2. Pre-flight
`wise_preflight {workflow, cwd, answers}`; `cwd` is the absolute git
toplevel, else pwd; `answers` is `{}` on the first call.
- `WORKFLOW_NOT_FOUND`: say so, stop.
- `WORKFLOW_INVALID` whose `issues[]` name a v1 construct (`path:
version` with "v1 workflow", or hints that say `version: 2`): print
`<name> is a v1 workflow; using the legacy conductor.` and follow
`${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/references/legacy-conductor/run.md` from its
§1 instead of the rest of this file. Any other issue: list
`path: message (hint)` and stop.
- `requires_missing` non-empty: print one line per entry
(`plugin:<name>` needs `/plugin install`, `tool:<name>` needs the
binary on PATH) and stop; `wise_run` refuses with `REQUIRES_MISSING`
until they are installed.
The questionary is staged. Per tuning group it asks, in order, which
CLI runs the group (`harness.<group>`, offered only when more than one
CLI is logged in), which model of that CLI (`model.<group>`, the
engine's catalog), then the effort that model takes (`effort.<group>`).
Each answer unlocks the next stage, so loop: render the questions
returned, merge the answers into `answers`, call `wise_preflight` again
with them, until `questions` is empty. An answered question is never
returned twice.
Render each batch with one composite AskUserQuestion (four questions
per call at most): `choice` single-select with the default option
first, `multi` multiSelect with defaults listed first, `text` free text
with the default offered. Every question goes through the picker, never
a printed list. A `choice` with more than four options: the first four
(default first) are the picker's options, the rest are named in the
question text (`Other: <label> (<value>), ...`) and reach you through
the picker's Other field as a label or value; map that text back to the
option's value. Skip `locked: true` questions and `input.<name>` filled
positionally. Key answers by question id. Ask every question returned;
never answer one for the user or drop it to save a call.
## 3. Context and start
- Build `context` from the conversation: `ticket[]` as `{ref, title,
- body, url}` for tickets already fetched, `guidance` (operator text),
- `decisions` settled here, `links`. Children never see the transcript;
- include what they need, nothing they could not otherwise see.

+ For every ticket named in the inputs or the conversation (a bare key
+ like `LEC-772`, a browse URL) fetch it with whatever this session has:
+ the tracker's MCP tool, its CLI (`gh`, `glab`, `linear`, `jira`), or
+ `WebFetch` on a public URL. Compose one markdown body per ticket with
+ these sections, omitting empty ones: `## Description`, `## Acceptance

+ Build `context`: `ticket[]` as `{ref, title, body, url}` (the body
+ composed above), `guidance` (operator text), `decisions` settled here,
+ `links`. The engine writes each body to
+ `<run dir>/context/tickets/<ref>.md` at run creation and hands children
+ `{ref, title, url, path}`; they `Read` the file when they need it, so
+ the body rides to the engine once and never into a prompt. Never paste
+ ticket text into `guidance` or an input. Children never see the
+ transcript; include what they need, nothing they could not otherwise
+ see.

+ A ticket this session cannot fetch (no MCP, no CLI, a login page, a
+ 401/403): say which channels failed, then AskUserQuestion with `Paste
+ the ticket text`, `Fix access and retry`, `Abort`. Do not start the run
+ with a ticket that has no body.
`wise_run {workflow, cwd, answers, context, inputs}` returns
`run_id`. Print `Run <run_id> started (<workflow>).` `MISSING_ANSWERS`
lists required questions or inputs still without a value: ask them
with AskUserQuestion and call `wise_run` again.
## 4. Wait loop
`wise_wait {run_id, after}` with the default timeout; `after` is the
last `seq` seen (0 first). Never poll faster than the wait returns. If
the host moves a wait to a background task, its notification is the
wake-up: call again with the same `after`.
The user follows the run through these lines and nothing else, so
print them for EVERY `wise_wait` return before calling the next wait;
never fold several returns into one summary line and never skip
`step.progress` events. One line per event, never raw step output:
- `run.started`: the verdict.
- `step.started`: `> <step> (<harness> <model> <effort>): <message>`;
`message` is the step's description, print it when present.
- `step.progress` without `kind`: ` <step>: <message>`; the message
is `turn N, tool <Tool> <target>, <tokens>, <elapsed>: <what the
child last said>`. Print it as is.
- `step.progress` with `kind` (a child `wise_report`):
` <step> <kind>: <message>`.
- `step.done`: `ok <step>: <verdict>`.
- `warn`: `warn <step>: <message>`.
- `usage`: print nothing; add to running totals (input, output,
cache_read, cache_write, cost_usd).
- `unit.phase` / `unit.done`: `<unit> <phase>` / `<unit>: <verdict>`.
- `gate.opened` / `gate.answered`: `gate <step> opened` / `answered`.
- A wait that returns no events (timeout): one line
` waiting: <running steps> (<time since their step.started>)`.
When you act on the run yourself (a nudge, fetching something a step
lost, a second run), say what you are doing and why in one line before
the tool call, and what came back after it.
`gate` present: AskUserQuestion with `gate.message` and `gate.options`
(free text when `allow_text`), then `wise_answer {run_id, gate_id,
value}`. `GATE_STALE`: wait again. `done: true`: stop looping.
Ticket ids are markdown links when a URL is known.
## 5. Final report
Compact table from the collected events: step | verdict | harness and
model | tokens, then the run totals, then
`bash ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/engine/engine.sh report <run_id>` for usage
by pool and harness plus per-step verdicts (`units` is empty until M4).
On `run.failed`: print `status` and `error` from `wise_status
{run_id}` and point to `/wise-workflow-resume <run_id>`.
## Rules
- Never print raw step output; logs live in the ledger.
- `wise_nudge` only when the user steers a running step;
`wise_cancel` when the user aborts.
- Do not invoke other wise skills; the engine dispatches the steps.
