<essential_principles>
## What these prefixes are
IUPAC numerical multipliers are the word forms chemistry uses to count identical parts of a molecule: five hydroxyl groups make a `pentaol`, twenty-two carbons make `docosane`. They are a complete, rule-governed spelling of every integer, which is why they get borrowed as file ordinals. `tri-extraction.md` reads as a name; `03-extraction.md` reads as a slot.
Borrowing them is a real choice with a real cost. The rules below are that cost.
## Read the number from the right (LAW.IUPAC.1)
A composite prefix is assembled from the **least significant place upward**: units, then tens, then hundreds, then thousands. That is the reverse of how English says the number.
- 548 = octa (8) + tetraconta (40) + pentacta (500) = **octatetracontapentacta-**
- 241 = hen (1) + tetraconta (40) + dicta (200) = **hentetracontadicta-**
- 411 = undeca (11) + tetracta (400) = **undecatetracta-**
- 9267 = hepta (7) + hexaconta (60) + dicta (200) + nonalia (9000) = **heptahexacontadictanonalia-**
Every one of those reads backwards to an English speaker. That is not a slip in the transcription; it is the rule.
## One and two have two forms each (LAW.IUPAC.2)

Three exceptions, and they are the ones written wrong most often:
- **11 is `undeca-`**, not a `hen-` composite. Confirmed by 411 = `undecatetracta-`.
- **20, 200 and 2000 are `icosa-`, `dicta-`, `dilia-`.** Those are place roots, not `do-` composites. Never `doicosa-`.
- **`mono-` is dropped in chemistry and kept here.** A file ordinal must carry it, because a name with no prefix is not an ordinal. File one is `mono-`.
## The twenties elide (LAW.IUPAC.2)
The leading `i` of `icosa-` disappears after a unit root ending in a vowel, and survives after one ending in a consonant:
- 21 = `hen-` + `icosa-` = **henicosa-** (hen ends in n, so the i survives)
- 22 = `do-` + `cosa-` = **docosa-**
- 23 **tricosa-**, 24 **tetracosa-**, 29 **nonacosa-**
`hen-` is the only unit root ending in a consonant, so 21 is the only survivor in the decade.
## The sort trap (LAW.IUPAC.3)
Alphabetical order is not numeric order, and word ordinals get sorted alphabetically by every tool that lists files.

`deca-` (10) lands first. `mono-` (1) lands fourth. No choice of words fixes this: `d` really does come before `m`.
If the order must survive a listing, the **numeral leads and the word follows**:

The numeral is the key; the prefix is the name. Use the prefix alone only where order is carried by something else, such as an index file or an explicit table of contents.
## Ordinals are identities, not positions (LAW.IUPAC.4)
Once `tri-data.md` exists, 3 belongs to that file. A document that belongs conceptually between 3 and 4 takes the next free number at the end, not the number 4 with everything after it shifted. Renumbering a set renames every link, cross-reference and bookmark into it, and the word form makes those breaks silent rather than loud.
## Records count in Greek cardinals (LAW.IUPAC.6)
- The IUPAC multiplier says how many of a thing there are; a record asks which one this is. From 5.0.0 the ordinal token of a record under `artifacts/<command>/` is the Greek `cardinal`: `heis`, `duo`, `treis`, `tessares`, `pente`, `hex`, `hepta`, `okto`, `ennea`, `deka`, then `hendeka`, `dodeka`, the `-kaideka` teens, `eikosi-heis` and so on, joined by hyphens from the largest place down. The second record of a command is `<name>.duo.md`. The IUPAC form is printed beside it as the second column, and a name written before this law (`mono`, `di`) still reads as the same number: the next free ordinal is measured from the directory, never from memory.

## Stop before the reader does (LAW.IUPAC.5)
`hexaoctacontatetracta-` is 486. Nobody reads that, nobody types it, and nobody notices when it is misspelled.
- 1 to 12: the words are short and carry meaning. Use them.
- 13 to 20: still recognisable.
- 21 to 99: state the digits beside the word the first time it appears.
- 100 and up: use digits. The word form is correct and useless.

<process>
To turn an ordinal N into a prefix:
1. **Split N by place.** Units, tens, hundreds, thousands. 548 gives units 8, tens 40, hundreds 500.
2. **Look up each place.** Full tables in `references/prefix-table.md`.
3. **Choose the form for 1 and 2.** Standalone `mono-` or `di-` only when N is exactly 1 or 2; otherwise `hen-` or `do-`, minus the three exceptions above.
4. **Concatenate from the smallest place upward.** Units, then tens, then hundreds, then thousands.
5. **Apply the twenties elision** when the tens place is 20 and the unit root ends in a vowel.
6. **Assemble the name.** Lowercase prefix, one hyphen, the slug: `pentaconta-appendix.md`. Put the zero-padded numeral in front when order must survive a listing.
To read a prefix back into a number, run the same steps in reverse: split at the place roots, then add.

<caveats>
- **`icosa-` versus `eicosa-`.** IUPAC 2013 recommends `icosa-` for 20. `eicosa-` is the older spelling and survives in lipid vocabulary (`eicosanoid`, `eicosapentaenoic`). Pick one per project and say which.
- **`bis-`, `tris-`, `tetrakis-` do a different job.** They multiply compound or complex features, not simple counts. A file ordinal never needs them.
- **`ter-`, `quinque-`, `sexi-`, `septi-` are a third series** for assemblies of identical units (`biphenyl`, `terphenyl`). Do not mix them into an ordinal set.
- **Collation changes the sort.** Alphabetical order differs between locales, which is a second reason the numeral leads.
- **These are real chemistry words.** `hexadeca-`, `octa-` and `deca-` collide with chemical search results in any repository that also discusses chemistry.
