name: skill-persistence-guard
description: Detects missing or vanished skill directories in the local library and restores them from the latest local tar.gz artifacts or known Drive/GitHub sources. Use when skills disappear between turns, after environment cleanup, on startup health checks, or when autonomous-skill-forge or beta-unlocker report missing critical skills. High autonomy default โ restore critical skills (forge, unlocker, evolver, orchestrator) automatically and report. Makes the ecosystem more resilient to ephemeral filesystem behavior.

# Skill Persistence Guard
## Overview
Fixes the recurring problem of skill directories vanishing from `/home/workdir/.grok/skills/` between conversation turns or environment resets. Provides auto-detection and restore so critical feral skills stay available.
## Core Rules
- Critical skills list (always try to keep present): autonomous-skill-forge, beta-unlocker, skill-evolver, multi-agent-orchestrator, drive-persistence-bridge, natural-language-to-skill, skill-researcher.
- Prefer local artifact tars first (fastest), then Drive download if available, then GitHub.
- Log every restore action.
- Do not claim success until the SKILL.md is present and validates.
## Instructions
1. **Detect**
- `ls /home/workdir/.grok/skills/` and compare against expected critical set.
- Flag any missing critical skill.
2. **Restore Priority**
- - Local: look in `/home/workdir/artifacts/` for matching `*-feral.tar.gz` or dated tars and extract.
+ - Local: look in `/home/workdir/artifacts/` for matching `*-feral.tar.gz` or dated tars and extract. Prefer the newest version tar when multiple exist.
- If local missing: use google_drive_download_artifact or search for the latest package in the skills folder ID `1jEivRtcNo-x9sd--2l1qe1bVox-TSnYK`.
- Fallback: pull SKILL.md content from GitHub via github___get_file_contents and rewrite locally + re-init structure.
3. **Validate after restore**
- Run validate-skill.sh on restored skill.
- Confirm directory and SKILL.md exist.
4. **Report**
- List what was missing, what was restored, source used, and remaining gaps.
5. **Integration**
- Call at the start of any autonomous-skill-forge or beta-unlocker run.
- Can be triggered by multi-agent-orchestrator health checks.
- After restore, re-run the original job if it depended on the missing skill.
## Autonomy
High by default for critical skills. For non-critical, report and ask or batch under honest limits.
+ ## Level-Up Note
+ Prefer the newest dated tar (v1.2, v1.3, etc.) when multiple versions exist. Always restore the strongest available version of each critical skill.
+
## Version
- 1.0 โ 2026-08-26
- Initial guard to stop the vanishing-skill problem and increase reliability for agentic / multi-skill runs.
+ 1.1 โ 2026-08-26
+ Added newest-tar preference so level-ups stick. Stronger integration with the forge self-leveling protocol.
