Audit, detect, and remediate Shadow Credentials misconfigurations on msDS-KeyCredentialLink in Active Directory. Focuses on access-controls, monitoring Event ID 5136, and credential-management hygiene.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

# Auditing and Remediating Shadow Credentials in Active Directory
> **Security Advisory:** This guide provides defense and audit procedures for identifying, monitoring, and remediating overly permissive write access to `msDS-KeyCredentialLink` (Shadow Credentials) in Active Directory environments.
## Overview
The **Shadow Credentials** attack vector stems from misconfigured Active Directory Access Control Lists (ACLs) where non-administrative principals possess write permissions over the `msDS-KeyCredentialLink` attribute of user or computer accounts. This attribute normally stores raw public keys ("Key Credentials") used by Windows Hello for Business and Microsoft Entra ID device registration for passwordless PKINIT Kerberos authentication.
When access permissions are too permissive — such as unconstrained `GenericWrite`, `GenericAll`, `WriteProperty`, or `AddKeyCredentialLink` Access Control Entries (ACEs) — an unauthorized principal could append a key credential to an account, bypass password controls, and obtain Kerberos tickets.

How to install
mdr add andycungkrinx91/konoha/abusing-shadow-credentials-for-privesc@sha256:08a33eeccfa42e3aThe line at the top of this page pins the label v1.0, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
