Modern Python house style: ruff is the single formatter and linter (replacing black, isort, flake8, pylint, pyupgrade) with an opinionated lint select set, plus idioms ruff cannot enforce — pathlib over os.path, module-level logging instead of print, specific chained exceptions, dataclasses for data, comprehensions and context managers. Use when formatting, linting, reviewing, or refactoring Python code or improving its idiomatic style; setting up, configuring, or running ruff…
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Python style conventions
`ruff` is the whole formatting and linting toolchain — it replaces black, isort, flake8, pylint,
pyupgrade, and autoflake. Apply these conventions to new code and match them when editing existing
code. For the rationale behind the rule selection and the idiom edge cases, see
[reference.md](reference.md).
## 1. ruff is the formatter and the linter
`ruff format` owns layout (it is black-compatible — do not also run black) and `ruff check` owns
linting and import sorting (do not also run isort or flake8). Run both through `uv run`:
```sh
uv run ruff format . # format in place (the line-length authority)
uv run ruff check --fix . # lint + sort imports + apply safe fixes
```
Let `ruff format` win every formatting argument — never hand-format around it or sprinkle
`# fmt: off`.
## 2. Select rules explicitly
Ruff's default is tiny (`E`, `F`). Opt into the families that catch real bugs and modernize code,
in `pyproject.toml`:
```toml
[tool.ruff.lint]
select = [
"E", "F", # pycodestyle + pyflakes (the baseline)
"I", # import sorting (replaces isort)
"UP", # pyupgrade — modern syntax for the target-version
How to install
mdr add bitwise-media-group/skills/python-style@sha256:6c0dec27e14ed744The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260701.89b4f1f, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
