Default communication rule, two parts. (1) Brevity: before finishing any response, check whether it would run over roughly 150 words or lean on unexplained jargon. If so, and the user has not explicitly asked for full technical detail in the same turn, replace it with an ELI5 answer under 40 words instead. Also triggers immediately on a literal ELI5 request in the user's message (eli5, ELI5, Eli5, "ELI 5" with a space, or an explicit word cap like "< 40 words"), even with no other context.…

Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

What the file says

# diu

## Why this exists

Calibrated from ~24 real "eli5" requests mined from Claude Code and Codex CLI
session history: the user asks for "eli5" constantly, almost always
proactively in the same message as the question rather than as a follow-up
complaint after a bad answer, most often on root-cause "why is this broken"
debugging questions, architecture explanations, and PR summaries.

The shape rules below were originally a separate opt-in skill
(`i-have-adhd`, toggled on with `/i-have-adhd` and off with "stop adhd
mode"). Mining showed the same underlying need shows up constantly without
the toggle ever being invoked — buried answers, preamble, un-numbered
multi-step instructions — so the structural half of that skill is now part
of diu's default, always-on behavior instead of something to remember to
turn on.

## Part 1: brevity trigger

1. Before sending a response, estimate its length and jargon density.
2. If it would exceed 150 words, or uses terms the user hasn't already used and
hasn't asked to have explained at that depth, stop and rewrite it as ELI5:
under 40 words, plain everyday language, lead with the outcome, no
   unexplained acronyms or jargon.

How to install

The exact contents, by fingerprint
mdr add edbertchan/catstack/diu@sha256:8cc8d605762c4bc7

The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261022.f578536, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
