# Source evaluation A source is not good or bad in general. It is adequate or inadequate for the specific claim you want to rest on it, and the way to find out is to trace it, date it, and ask who wants it believed. ## When this fires A claim is about to be relied on, quoted, or cited. Also when sources conflict, when a number arrives without its method, or when a "widely reported" fact needs its origin found. It does not fire for facts you can verify directly in the workspace — read the file instead. ## Procedure 1. **Name what kind of source it is.** Primary is the thing itself: the specification, the source code, the release notes, the filing, the raw dataset, the first-hand account. Secondary reports on primary. Tertiary aggregates secondary. Write down which one you are holding. 2. **Walk upstream until you reach primary or a dead end.** Follow each citation to the thing it cites. Record where the trail stops. A trail ending at an uncited post means the claim is uncorroborated, however many places repeat it. 3. **Date it, twice** — when it was published and when it was last updated — and pin the version of …
