Create a structured session handoff when context is running low or work is pausing. Deep context mining, self-validation, multi-file splitting. Captures everything the next session needs.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

# Session Handoff
**Guards:**
- **Not plan mode.** This skill writes files. If in Claude Code plan mode, exit first.
- **Not shadowing.** NEVER generate handoff-like documents freeform. Freeform summaries look right but lack chain tracking, self-validation, and evidence mining. Only this skill produces handoffs.
- **Not when discussing.** Only run when the user explicitly asks to CREATE a handoff right now. If ambiguous ("what does handoff do", "edit the handoff file"), ask first.
Typical use: ~75% context. You have a lot of conversation to mine — extract maximum value before closing. On 1M context that's ~750K tokens of history.
The user should not need to provide anything — `/handoff` alone is sufficient.
**Arguments:** $ARGUMENTS
### Compact mode
If `$ARGUMENTS` contains the word `compact-mode`, the `compact-handoff` mod started this run. It replaces the conversation with this handoff when your turn ends, so the turn must finish with nothing pending:
- Run Steps 1-6 exactly as normal. Anything else in `$ARGUMENTS` is the framing hint.

How to install
mdr add remvisual/claude-handoff/handoff@sha256:1f019f0df7a41fdaThe line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261019.22b326e, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
