Universal MCP client for connecting to any MCP server with progressive disclosure. Wraps MCP servers as skills to avoid context window bloat from tool definitions. Use when interacting with external MCP servers (Zapier, Sequential Thinking, GitHub, filesystem, etc.), listing available tools, or executing MCP tool calls. Triggers on requests like "connect to Zapier", "use MCP server", "list MCP tools", "call Zapier action", "use sequential thinking", or any MCP server interaction.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

# Universal MCP Client
Connect to any MCP server with progressive disclosure - load tool schemas on-demand instead of dumping thousands of tokens into context upfront.

## Configuration
The script looks for config in this order:
1. `MCP_CONFIG_PATH` env var (custom path)
2. **`references/mcp-config.json`** (this skill's config - recommended)
3. `.mcp.json` in project root
4. `~/.claude.json`
**Your config file:** `.claude/skills/mcp-client/references/mcp-config.json`
Edit this file to add your API keys. The example file (`example-mcp-config.json`) is kept as a reference template.
Security note:
- Never commit real API keys. This repo uses a placeholder `${AY_PROPOSALS_API_KEY}` for the AY Proposals server.
- Option 1 (recommended): Create a private config and point the script to it: `export MCP_CONFIG_PATH=~/.claude/skills/mcp-client/references/mcp-config.local.json` (same structure, with your real token). Keep that file out of git.

How to install
mdr add walidboulanouar/ay-skills/mcp-client@sha256:c4b3d58156dc8c43The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260310.2ad5418, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
