Guidelines for implementing JWT authentication with security best practices for token creation, validation, and storage.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# JWT Security
You are an expert in JSON Web Token (JWT) security implementation. Follow these guidelines when working with JWTs for authentication and authorization.
## Core Principles
- JWTs are not inherently secure - security depends on implementation
- Always validate tokens server-side, even for internal services
- Use asymmetric signing (RS256, ES256) when possible
- Keep tokens short-lived and implement proper refresh mechanisms
- Never store sensitive data in JWT payloads
## Token Structure
A JWT consists of three parts: Header, Payload, and Signature.
```
header.payload.signature
```
### Header Best Practices
```json
{
"alg": "RS256",
"typ": "JWT",
"kid": "key-identifier-for-rotation"
}
```
- Always include `kid` (key ID) for key rotation support
- Use `typ: "JWT"` explicitly
- Never accept `alg: "none"`
### Payload Best Practices
```json
{
"iss": "https://auth.example.com",
"sub": "user-uuid-here",
"aud": "https://api.example.com",
"exp": 1704067200,
"iat": 1704063600,
"nbf": 1704063600,
"jti": "unique-token-id"
}
```
Required claims:
- `iss` (issuer): Who created the token
- `sub` (subject): Who the token represents

How to install
mdr add mindrally/skills/jwt-security@sha256:c25fe6c45b2cef73The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261008.7682ca7, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
