Comprehensive toolkit for validating, optimizing, and understanding Prometheus Query Language (PromQL) queries. Use this skill when working with PromQL queries, prometheus queries, metrics queries, alerting rules, recording rules, or grafana dashboards to check syntax, detect anti-patterns, identify optimization opportunities, and interactively plan queries with users.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# PromQL Validator ## When to Use This Skill Use this skill when you need to: - Validate PromQL query syntax and semantics. - Detect anti-patterns and high-cardinality risks in queries or dashboards. - Review alerting or recording rules before they ship. - Explain what a query does and compare it against the intended goal. - Suggest optimisations such as recording rules or tighter label matchers. ## When Not to Use - Authoring a new query from scratch: use `promql-generator` instead. - Non-PromQL query languages: use the tool that matches that language. - Diagnosing Prometheus server health or scrape failures: that is an operations concern, not query validation. - Confirming that a metric or label value exists in a live deployment: the scripts cannot check this, so test against a real Prometheus instance. ## Philosophy - **Valid is not production-ready.** Syntactic validity says nothing about correctness, cost, or intent. - **Know the metric type first.** A query cannot be judged without knowing whether its series are counters, gauges, or histograms. - **Guard cardinality.** A dashboard query that keeps a high-cardinality label can overload the TSDB; flag it. …

How to install
mdr add pantheon-org/tekhne/promql-validator@sha256:f804757afe8ae9feThe line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261001.6ed2a6a, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
