Use when asked why code exists or why it works the way it does - "why is this here", "why did we pick Y", "who added this and for what", "is it safe to remove", a regression's origin, a magic threshold, or a workaround with no comment - and before deleting or reshaping code whose reason you cannot see.

Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

What the file says

# lineage

Every dish on the menu has a history: who put it there, what the dining room wanted that week, what failed before it. A new cook who rips it out without asking repeats the failure. This skill traces code back to its reasons and says how sure it is.

**Core principle:** code shows what it does, not why it exists. The why lives in commits, reviews, tickets, docs, and tests, all incomplete. Cite what you found, label what you inferred, and say plainly what you could not find out.

## Procedure

1. **Pin the target and the question.** Name the file, line range, and symbol, and what is being asked (design rationale, regression origin, safe-to-remove, where a number came from). If the referent is vague, state your best reading and proceed so the user can redirect.
2. **Check Brigade evidence first if a store exists.** Run `brigade evidence search "<query>"`, inspect the selected item, and cite its evidence id. If Brigade is absent or returns nothing, write "no Brigade evidence" and continue. Never invent an id.
3. **Anchor in the code and history.**

How to install

The exact contents, by fingerprint
mdr add escoffier-labs/skillet/lineage@sha256:34db210a0174be35

The line at the top of this page pins the label v0.1.0, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
