Analyze PDF files attached by the user. Activates automatically when user uploads a PDF. Handles both text-based and scanned/image-based PDFs using file_read's built-in PDF rendering.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

# PDF Reader
Analyze PDF files using the `file_read` tool which natively supports PDF rendering.
## How file_read handles PDFs
- `file_read` with a `.pdf` path renders pages as images for vision analysis
- Parameters: `offset` = start page (0-based), `limit` = max pages (default 5)
- Each page is rendered at 144 DPI, resized to 1568px max dimension
- Returns image blocks that you can analyze with vision
## Workflow
1. **Read the PDF**: Call `file_read` with the PDF path. It will render pages as images automatically.

2. **For multi-page PDFs**: Read in batches using offset and limit.

3. **Analyze the content**: The rendered pages come back as images. Describe what you see — text, tables, charts, forms, signatures, stamps, etc.
4. **Extract text if needed**: For text-heavy PDFs where you need exact content, use bash with python:

How to install
mdr add kocoro-lab/kocoro/pdf-reader@sha256:59361e9e18575566The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260410.b8e38fa, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
