Guide to creating gptme plugins with tools, hooks, and commands — covers ToolSpec, lifecycle hooks, custom /commands, testing, and pyproject.toml setup.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# gptme Plugin Development
**Description:** Guide to creating gptme plugins with tools, hooks, and commands.
## When to Use Plugins vs Skills/Lessons
| Need | Use | Why |
|------|-----|-----|
| Share knowledge/workflows | Skills/Lessons | Lightweight bundles, no runtime |
| Custom tools (new actions) | Plugins | Extend capabilities via Python |
| Runtime hooks (lifecycle) | Plugins | Deep integration with gptme |
| Custom commands (/cmd) | Plugins | Add CLI commands |
## Plugin Structure
```tree
my_plugin/
├── pyproject.toml # Package metadata + dependencies
├── README.md # Documentation
├── src/
│ └── gptme_my_plugin/ # Package name
│ ├── __init__.py # Simple init (avoid heavy imports)
│ └── tools/
│ └── __init__.py # ToolSpec definitions
└── tests/
└── test_my_plugin.py # Tests
```
## Step-by-Step: Creating a Tool Plugin
### 1. Create pyproject.toml
```toml
[project]
name = "gptme-my-plugin"
version = "0.1.0"
description = "My custom gptme plugin"
requires-python = ">=3.10"
dependencies = [
"gptme>=0.27.0", # Required for ToolSpec, etc.
]
[project.optional-dependencies]
test = [
"pytest>=8.0.0",
]
…Read the whole file at its exact version.
How to install
mdr add gptme/gptme-contrib/plugin-development@sha256:6e46c2712158f5ecThe line at the top of this page pins the label v1.0.0, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
