# Narrative Engine
## Start here — mode gate
For a new piece, first check whether the user explicitly selected **Fast** or **Deep**. One shortcut counts as selecting Fast: the user states the main point they want the piece to make AND signals speed ("quick", "just write it", "no questions"). Then go straight to Fast and say so in one line; the Fast brief still goes to the user for approval before any writing. If neither mode was selected and the shortcut does not apply, the next response is only the mode question with a brief explanation of the two choices. Stop there: no source analysis, brief, outline, writing or agent dispatch. Without a stated main point, “quick”, “just write it” or “no questions” do not select a mode. Asking the mode is part of invoking this skill, not optional discovery. Use this first-response form:
> Choose **Fast** (I infer the framing and show a brief for approval) or **Deep** (we work through the framing together). Neither is selected by default.
