# MCP Integration for Claude Code Plugins
## Overview
Model Context Protocol (MCP) enables Claude Code plugins to integrate with external services and APIs by providing structured tool access. Use MCP integration to expose external service capabilities as tools within Claude Code.
**Key capabilities:**

## MCP Server Configuration Methods
Plugins can bundle MCP servers in two ways:
### Method 1: Dedicated .mcp.json (Recommended)
Create `.mcp.json` at plugin root:

How to install
mdr add anthropics/claude-plugins-official/mcp-integration@sha256:b9319d8e44c8f058The line at the top of this page pins the label v0.1.0, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
