Never read .env files or write secrets to .squad/ committed files.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
## Context Spawned agents have read access to the entire repository, including `.env` files containing live credentials. If an agent reads secrets and writes them to `.squad/` files (decisions, logs, history), Scribe auto-commits them to git, exposing them in remote history. This skill codifies absolute prohibitions and safe alternatives. ## Patterns ### Prohibited File Reads **NEVER read these files:** - `.env` (production secrets) - `.env.local` (local dev secrets) - `.env.production` (production environment) - `.env.development` (development environment) - `.env.staging` (staging environment) - `.env.test` (test environment with real credentials) - Any file matching `.env.*` UNLESS explicitly allowed (see below) **Allowed alternatives:** - `.env.example` (safe — contains placeholder values, no real secrets) - `.env.sample` (safe — documentation template) - `.env.template` (safe — schema/structure reference) **If you need config info:** 1. **Ask the user directly** — "What's the database connection string?" 2. **Read `.env.example`** — shows structure without exposing secrets 3. **Read documentation** — check `README.md`, `docs/`, config guides …

How to install
mdr add bradygaster/squad/secret-handling@sha256:b59ecbc69e0e5d29The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260910.9cf5842, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
