Look up CVE vulnerability details by ID via MITRE CVE API with NVD fallback — severity, CVSS score, affected products, and references.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# CVE API — Vulnerability Lookup
Look up any CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) by ID to get severity, CVSS score, affected products, and reference links. Uses the MITRE CVE API (cveawg.mitre.org) with automatic fallback to the NVD (National Vulnerability Database) for richer data.
**No API key required.** Optionally set `NVD_API_KEY` for higher rate limits on the NVD endpoint.
## When to Use
- User asks about a specific CVE by ID (e.g. "what is CVE-2021-44228?")
- Security team needs severity and CVSS score for patch prioritization
- Incident response: quickly triage whether a reported CVE is critical
- Compliance audit: confirm affected software versions for a given vulnerability
- User asks "is this CVE critical?", "what does CVE-XXXX-XXXXX affect?"
## How to Use
### Look up a single CVE (MITRE CVE API)
```powershell
$cveId = "CVE-2021-44228"
$url = "https://cveawg.mitre.org/api/cve/$cveId"
$result = Invoke-RestMethod -Uri $url
$cna = $result.containers.cna
$desc = ($cna.descriptions | Where-Object { $_.lang -eq 'en' } | Select-Object -First 1).value
$cvss = $cna.metrics | ForEach-Object {
How to install
mdr add taracodlabs/aiden/cveapi@sha256:6eb82d0eba248210The line at the top of this page pins the label v1.0.0, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
