Applies descriptive, self-documenting naming in any language (TypeScript, bash, workflow YAML, Dockerfiles). Use this skill whenever naming or renaming an identifier, variable, constant, function, parameter, env var, workflow job, or Dockerfile ARG/ENV, or reviewing names for vagueness, abbreviations, or redundant type noise.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

# Naming Conventions
Follow Apple's Swift API Design Guidelines: names should be clear at the point of use, reading like prose. Favor long, descriptive names over short or abbreviated ones.
- **Functions and methods**: imperative verb phrases: `calculateProgressPercentageFromCompletedSets`, `processUserOnboardingProfile`
- **Parameters**: role, not type: `totalSeconds` not `n`, `emailAddress` not `s`
- **Variables**: what they hold: `restDurationInSeconds`, `submitButton`, `weightInputValue`
- **No abbreviations**: owned by `.claude/rules/no-abbreviations.md`
- **No type noise**: `availableExercises` not `exerciseArray`, and never so short it loses clarity

> **Exception, React event handlers** follow `handle{Action}{Element}` from the react-code skill
> (e.g. `handleClickSave`, `handleChangeInput`), the `{Element}` is required, since a bare

How to install
mdr add gaia-react/gaia/naming-conventions@sha256:2b9db1993d431560The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261019.39d38f1, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
