Map unfamiliar code one layer up: modules, callers, callees, entrypoints, boundaries, dependencies, and data flow. Trigger on zoom out, call graph, module map, architecture map, who calls this, or orientation before edits. Do NOT use for line-by-line explanation or already-scoped bug fixes.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# zoom-out
Create a grounded map of an unfamiliar code area before diving into implementation or detailed explanation.
## Decision Tree
What is the user asking for?
- "Zoom out", "go up a layer", "map the relevant modules and callers", "who calls this", or similar orientation language
Use this skill. Produce a code context map before making recommendations.
- A specific symbol, file, route, job, table, command, event, or component is named
Trace direct callers, direct callees, entrypoints, and boundary crossings. Use the inventory helper if its candidate map would add evidence beyond what is already known.
- A feature or subsystem is named, but no concrete entrypoint is obvious
Find likely entrypoints first: routes, commands, jobs, public exports, UI screens, handlers, tests, migrations, and package manifests.
- The user asks "how does this work?" and wants teaching, not just orientation
Build the map first if the area is unfamiliar, then use {{ skill:eli12 }} for the final teaching-style explanation.
- The user asks for a bug fix or implementation and the edit target is unclear

How to install
mdr add jpcaparas/skills/zoom-out@sha256:c0df392200c6c855The line at the top of this page pins the label v1.0.0, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
