Defensive CI/CD patterns: semver validation, token checks, retry logic, and draft detection.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

## Context
CI workflows must be defensive. These patterns capture lessons from prior release incidents;
they are maintained as version-agnostic gates rather than claims about a particular repository
release.
## Patterns
### Semver Validation Gate
Every publish workflow MUST validate version format before `npm publish`. 4-part versions (e.g., 0.8.21.4) are NOT valid semver — npm mangles them.

### NPM Token Type Verification
NPM_TOKEN MUST be an Automation token, not a User token with 2FA:
- User tokens require OTP — CI can't provide it → EOTP error
- Create Automation tokens at npmjs.com → Settings → Access Tokens → Automation
- Verify before first publish in any workflow

How to install
mdr add bradygaster/squad/ci-validation-gates@sha256:0bb6c4dc64706bdfThe line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260911.f640e80, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
