# mcptoon — MCP tool-catalog compression ## Step 0 — is it installed? (do this before anything else) **Before you run any `mcptoon …` command below, check that the CLI is actually on this machine.** The skill travels alone: agents and dotfiles repos copy this one file, and the binary is not part of the copy. So the common failure is an agent holding this skill on a machine where `mcptoon` does not exist — it then reads the commands as instructions, tries them, and they fail. ```bash mcptoon --version # if this prints a version, skip to the next section ``` If that fails, do **not** keep going through the tables below — install it first: ```bash pip install mcptoon # or: uvx mcptoon … / pipx install mcptoon ``` `uvx mcptoon <args>` runs it with no install at all, if `uvx` is available. Then say one plain sentence to the user — for example *"this skill is installed but the mcptoon CLI is not; I installed it"* — and continue. How to install
mdr add activeing123/mcptoon/mcptoon@sha256:7e4b37ea317a1c94The line at the top of this page pins the label v1.4.2, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
