Modern Go testing patterns including table-driven tests, subtests, test organization, and best practices. Use when writing or refactoring tests, implementing test coverage, or when the user asks about Go testing approaches.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Go Testing Patterns
Modern testing patterns for Go following 2025-2026 best practices.
## Table-Driven Tests
The idiomatic Go approach for comprehensive testing.
**Basic structure:**
```go
func TestFeature(t *testing.T) {
tests := []struct {
name string
input string
expected int
wantErr bool
}{
{
name: "valid input",
input: "hello",
expected: 5,
wantErr: false,
},
{
name: "empty input",
input: "",
expected: 0,
wantErr: true,
},
}
for _, tt := range tests {
t.Run(tt.name, func(t *testing.T) {
got, err := ProcessString(tt.input)
if tt.wantErr {
if err == nil {
t.Errorf("expected error, got nil")
}
return
}
if err != nil {
t.Fatalf("unexpected error: %v", err)
}
if got != tt.expected {
t.Errorf("got %d, want %d", got, tt.expected)
}
})
}
}
```
## Using Subtests with t.Run()
**Benefits:**
- Clear failure messages showing which case failed
- Can run specific tests: `go test -run TestFeature/valid_input`
- Parallel execution support
**Pattern:**
```go
for _, tt := range tests {
t.Run(tt.name, func(t *testing.T) {
How to install
mdr add codeready-toolchain/tarsy/golang-testing-patterns@sha256:9eac58b03b0a7237The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260318.55a058c, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
