Module manifest conventions: how to declare, register, and document modules so the codebase stays navigable and agents can discover interfaces without reading full implementations.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Module Manifests ## What it is A module manifest is a short header block at the top of a non-trivial source file. It lives in the code itself so that comprehension travels with the code — not in Architect plans that get discarded after merge, not in wikis that drift, not in PR descriptions nobody reads six months later. This is the self-describing layer of the system: a reader should be able to open a file and immediately understand what it does, what it depends on, and what breaks if it misbehaves. ## When encouraged **Encouraged** for any source file that meets one or more of these criteria: - Exports a public symbol (function, class, type, constant) consumed by another module - Over ~50 lines of non-trivial logic - Implements a side-effecting operation: network call, disk I/O, database access, external service interaction, or any operation that cannot be safely retried without thought **Exempt:** - Test files and test fixtures - Generated files (migration outputs, protobuf outputs, GraphQL codegen, etc.) - One-off scripts not imported by anything else - Trivial pure utility files (thin wrappers, simple formatters, constants-only files) …

How to install
mdr add space-dinosaurs/dinostack/.cursor/rules/module-manifest.mdc@sha256:4a3f9cc8c82e30b7The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261017.f9a7386, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
