Wraps the buf CLI for protobuf PR gating: `buf build` (compile .proto), `buf lint` (STANDARD rules: snake_case fields, Service suffix), `buf breaking --against {ref}` (detect wire/codegen breakage vs a git/BSR baseline), and `buf format`. Use as the CI proto-lint + breaking-change gate, or to debug a breaking failure by rule ID (e.g. FIELD_NO_DELETE_UNLESS_NUMBER_RESERVED) and pick the FILE/PACKAGE/WIRE_JSON/WIRE ruleset per consumer. This is the detection TOOL that enforces the rules and…
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# buf-cli-lint-breaking-build
## Overview
Wraps three buf CLI commands - `build`, `lint`, `breaking` - as the
proto-PR gate, per
[buf.build/docs/cli/quickstart/](https://buf.build/docs/cli/quickstart/).
The catalog of what counts as breaking and why lives in
[references/versioning-strategy.md](references/versioning-strategy.md)
(+ [references/buf-breaking-rules.md](references/buf-breaking-rules.md)).
## When to use
- Adding buf as the proto lint + breaking-change gate on a new
repo.
- A PR changes `.proto` files - need to gate the merge.
- Investigating a `buf breaking` failure - what rule fired?
- Configuring buf for a monorepo with multiple proto modules.
## Authoring

How to install
mdr add testland/qa/buf-cli-lint-breaking-build@sha256:02e8ec178fac4130The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260813.0ecb572, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
