Scoped, behavior-preserving refactor: map dependencies, change structure, run affected tests. Use when "refactor this", "reduce duplication", or "improve readability". Dead code → plan-dead-code. Repo-wide smells → audit-code-quality.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Refactor Code Skill **Degree of freedom: MIXED.** Structure target `[HIGH freedom]`; behavior-preserving checks and affected tests `[LOW freedom — run exactly]`. ## How to reason 1. **Observe** — current structure, callers, tests 2. **Interpret** — duplication vs needed variation 3. **Classify** — extract / inline / rename / stop (behavior would change) 4. **Severity** — a public API change is not this skill Everything here **preserves behavior**. Removing code is a different contract: `plan-dead-code` proves it unreachable and `housekeep-dead-code` deletes it against an approved list. Duplication findings arrive here from those skills; deletions do not leave from here. ## Worked example > **Observe:** three copy-pasted date formatters; tests only cover one. > **Interpret:** same behavior, three implementations. > **Classify:** extract `formatDate`; add the missing two call-site tests first (red), then extract (green). > **Verify:** same output; no new features. ## Self-critique before reporting - **Behavior same** — existing tests still pass; no silent product change - **Scoped** — not a repo-wide drive-by …

How to install
mdr add kensaurus/cursor-kenji/workflow-refactor@sha256:c16dc507e5ba5a76The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260923.68c095e, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
