When running multi-line Python code or code with quotes, apostrophes, or f-strings via Bash, always use heredoc syntax instead of python -c to avoid shell quoting issues.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Python Heredoc Pattern
Run Python via `Bash`? **Never** `python -c "..."` beyond trivial one-liners. Shell quoting break on f-strings, apostrophes, nested quotes, escape sequences.
## Use heredoc syntax instead
```bash
uv run python << 'PYTHON_CODE'
import json
data = {"name": "it's working", "value": f"{1 + 2}"}
print(json.dumps(data, indent=2))
PYTHON_CODE
```
Single quotes round `'PYTHON_CODE'` block shell var expansion. `$variables` and backticks stay literal Python.
## With dependencies
```bash
uv run --with requests python << 'PYTHON_CODE'
import requests
resp = requests.get("https://api.example.com/data")
print(resp.json())
PYTHON_CODE
```
## Rules
1. Always `uv run python` (not bare `python` or `python3`)
2. Always quote delimiter: `<< 'PYTHON_CODE'` (not `<< PYTHON_CODE`)
3. Closing `PYTHON_CODE` own line, no leading whitespace
4. Never `python -c` for code with quotes, f-strings, multiple statementsRead the whole file at its exact version.
How to install
mdr add crypdick/pynchy/python-heredoc@sha256:0a9121fdeefc3335The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260724.7ea9bfa, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
