Design relational database schemas (and choose when to go NoSQL) that stay maintainable and fast. Use this skill whenever the user mentions tables, DDL, entities and relationships, normalization (1NF/2NF/3NF), primary and foreign keys, UUID vs bigint IDs, indexes (B-tree, composite, covering, partial), EXPLAIN, constraints (CHECK, UNIQUE, exclusion), transactions and isolation levels, migrations (Alembic, Prisma, Flyway, expand-contract, backfilling), or SQL vs NoSQL…
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

# Database Design
Database design turns a domain into a schema that stays fast, correct, and easy to evolve for years. This skill covers the full pipeline — requirements analysis, entity modeling, normalization, keys, constraints, indexes, and safe migrations — plus deciding when a document, wide-column, or graph store beats a relational database.

## Core Workflow
Work through these steps in order — each informs the next, and skipping requirements analysis is the most common source of bad schemas.

The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260813.4b33420, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
