Template for creating new skills in gptme-contrib. Use this as a starting point when creating your own skills.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Template Skill
This is a minimal skill template demonstrating the basic structure of a gptme skill.
## Overview
Skills are enhanced lessons that bundle:
- Instructional content (like lessons)
- Executable scripts and utilities (optional)
- Dependencies and setup requirements (optional)
- Hook points for automation (optional)
## Basic Structure
Every skill needs:
1. **SKILL.md** - This file with YAML frontmatter + Markdown content
2. **Supporting files** (optional) - Scripts, templates, or resources
## YAML Frontmatter
Required fields:
- `type: skill` - Distinguishes from lessons
- `name: skill-name` - Skill identifier (must match directory name)
- `description: ...` - What the skill does and when to use it
- `status: active` - active, automated, deprecated, or archived
- `match: {keywords: [...]}` - Trigger keywords
Optional fields:
- `scripts: []` - List of bundled Python scripts
- `dependencies: []` - Required Python packages
- `hooks: []` - Execution hooks (future feature)
Optional exchange fields (for publishing to a skill registry):
- `exchange.version` - Semantic version string (e.g. `"1.0.0"`)
- `exchange.author` - GitHub handle of the skill author

How to install
mdr add gptme/gptme-contrib/template-skill@sha256:19bed0210bafa39fThe line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260802.372b15e, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
