# Python Packaging Best Practices
This skill covers PEP 621 (pyproject.toml metadata) and PEP 723 (inline script metadata) for modern Python projects using uv.

## Quick Reference
**Always use `pyproject.toml`** with PEP 621 `[project]` table. Never `setup.py` or `requirements.txt` for new projects.
**For single-file scripts**, use PEP 723 inline metadata (`# /// script` block) so `uv run` auto-installs dependencies.
**Key commands:**

The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260920.677b300, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
