Fill PDF form fields programmatically using Python libraries like pypdf or pdfrw.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# PDF Form Filling with Python
## Overview
This skill covers how to identify and fill form fields in PDF documents, particularly for legal forms like court documents.
## Key Libraries
### 1. PyPDF (pypdf)
- Modern, actively maintained library for PDF manipulation
- Can read form field names and fill them
- Installation: `pip install pypdf`
### 2. pdfrw
- Lightweight alternative, good for form filling
- Installation: `pip install pdfrw`
## Common Workflow
### With pypdf:
```python
from pypdf import PdfReader, PdfWriter
# Read the blank form
reader = PdfReader("/path/to/form.pdf")
writer = PdfWriter()
# Get the form fields
fields = reader.get_fields()
print(fields.keys()) # See all available fields
# Create a copy and update fields
for page in reader.pages:
writer.add_page(page)
# Update fields
writer.update_page_form_field_values(
writer.pages[0],
{
"Field1": "Value1",
"Field2": "Value2",
}
)
# Save the result
with open("/path/to/filled.pdf", "wb") as f:
writer.write(f)
```
### With pdfrw:
```python
from pdfrw import PdfReader, PdfWriter, PdfDict, PdfObject
# Read template
template = PdfReader("/path/to/form.pdf")
…Read the whole file at its exact version.
How to install
mdr add cxcscmu/skilllearnbench/pdf-form-filling@sha256:a79b4403bcdaea13The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260424.d50cf5a, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
