Manually test a running Vellum assistant end-to-end purely from the CLI — no desktop app or web UI. Hatch an instance, send messages, watch the reply, and tear it down. Use when verifying assistant behavior, reproducing a bug, or smoke-testing a change without the macOS/web clients.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

# CLI Testing — Exercise the Assistant End-to-End
Drive a real assistant from the terminal only. The `vellum` CLI (`cli/`, package
`@vellumai/cli`) manages instance lifecycle; `vellum message` / `vellum events`
exercise a running instance. See [`cli/AGENTS.md`](../../../cli/AGENTS.md) and
the root [`README.md`](../../../README.md) § CLI for command reference.
## 0. Prerequisites

If `vellum` is missing, run `./setup.sh` from the repo root once (installs deps,
links the `vellum` command). Docker must be running for the default flow below.
## 1. Provide an LLM provider key (from the environment)
Local-mode and Docker-mode instances need **one** LLM provider key. The CLI reads
it straight from the host environment — just export it before hatching/setup:

How to install
mdr add vellum-ai/vellum-assistant/cli-testing@sha256:143c254822b09213The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260608.6985b64, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
