Write, review, and optionally test Bash and Zsh shell scripts following project coding standards. Use for ANY shell scripting task: (1) creating a new Bash or Zsh script, (2) editing, fixing, or reviewing an existing .sh, .bash, or .zsh file, (3) adding error handling, dependency checks, or cleanup traps to shell scripts, (4) implementing API integration or file processing in shell, (5) writing or fixing ShellSpec tests (spec/*_spec.sh), or (6) deciding whether a script should be written in…
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Bash Script Writer
Write Bash (default) or Zsh scripts following project standards, and decide whether ShellSpec tests are warranted.
## Workflow
1. **Choose the shell** — see [Step 1: Shell Selection](#step-1-shell-selection). Bash unless the user confirms Zsh.
2. **Load Zsh guidance only if needed** — when the chosen shell is Zsh, read [references/zsh.md](references/zsh.md) before writing any code. Do NOT load it for Bash work.
3. **Write the script** following [Script Structure](#script-structure) and [Coding Standards](#coding-standards). For Zsh, apply the overrides in `references/zsh.md`.
4. **Decide on testing** — see [Step 4: Testing Decision](#step-4-testing-decision). ShellSpec is optional, not the default.
5. **Verify** — always run at least the lightweight checks in [Verification](#verification).
## Step 1: Shell Selection
### Already decided — skip the decision
- **Editing an existing script**: keep its current shell. Do not migrate it unless the user asks.
- **User explicitly named the shell** ("write a zsh script", "make this a .zsh"): that counts as confirmation; use it.

How to install
mdr add jim60105/copilot-prompt/bash-script-writer@sha256:26f8bfeeda4f4922The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261007.6aedd98, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
